An affordable front-engined, rear wheel drive Porsche for any
enthusiast. Developed from the preceding 924, the 944 handled
better due to a near 50/50 weight distribution and could also
accelerate faster, as well as stop quicker. Under the hood of this
944 is a turbocharged and intercooled version of the 2.5L engine.
Internally known as the 951, turbo examples produced significantly
more horsepower and to compensate for this forged pistons and
ceramic port liners were implemented, along with numerous other
internal improvements. The gearbox was also strengthened, external
oil coolers for the engine and transmission were fitted, and an
integrated front bumper improved the vehicle's aerodynamic profile.
12" disc brakes with 4-piston calipers borrowed from the 911 were
hidden behind 16" wheels and the 944 rode on a stiffer suspension
setup. Since leaving the factory, this 944 has been upgraded into a
more than capable track car. Tens of thousands were invested in
servicing and upgrading the vehicle's components to make it both
competitive and reliable. The list includes, but is not limited to:
