For Sale: 1929 Ford Pickup in Mooresville, North Carolina

Vehicle Description

The Ford Model A had some big old shoes to fill by the time the Model T was phased out! Fortunately, the Model A was the perfect replacement for the Model T. Due to the extreme success of early Ford cars and trucks, it is no surprise that they took on the cult-like following they did. Model As became perfect candidates for customs, hot rods, race cars, and eventually restoration projects!

Flash forward 50 years, and a man by the name Harry Shay decided it was time to bring back the cars of yesteryear and start producing authentic Model A's and Model T's. He was met with approval both from Ford and the general public. The initial plan was to send one replica to each Ford dealer in the United States. One dealer is reported as saying he had not seen such response since the introduction of the Mustang almost 15 years earlier. The public was so enamored with the idea of a slightly modernized, new version of the Model A, that Shay Motors took in a large number of pre-orders and planned to build the cars in batches of 10,000 units. After the first 10,000 Roadsters were built, a variety of other replicas (including but not limited to a 1955 Thunderbird, 1932 Ford Roadster, and a 1965 Mustang) were to be built. No production numbers for the Model A truck have been reported other than 'a handful.' Unfortunately, Shay Motors went under in 1982, And with it, Shay's production plan fell by the wayside. Shay Motors was absorbed by Camelot Motors Inc., a company that continued doing what Shay had set out to do.

This two-tone 1929 Ford Model A Pickup isn't a homemade kit-car-this is the real-deal Shay replica. That means this is a well-built, properly styled, Ford-approved replica of a Model A pickup. As Shay replicas go, the Model A Roadster is the most common and the Model A truck is one of the least common. Though it is beginning to show its age (it is almost 40 years old!), this 1981-built 1929 Ford Model A Pickup is a great and complete example of the Shay Replicas.

The paint has some scratches and cracking, and is in overall fairly weathered condition. However, the paint looks great from just a few feet away and could easily be enjoyed as is! The yellow and black highlights the curves of the truck very nicely and would pass for colors you would have expected to seee in 29.

This Shay A pickup is powered by a 2.3L Ford Pinto four-cylinder engine and thanks to a variety of modern upgrades, drives like a much newer car than the one it was built to replicate! Though it may not drive exactly like a Model A, it sure does feel like one from the inside. These Shay replicas were really more of a barebones early resto-mod than a replica. If you glance underneath you'll see a rack and pinion steering under the front with shocks and coil springs and believe it or not, front disc brakes! Bolted to the 2.3L is an automatic transmission that makes driving this Shay a blast.

The interior is in great shape with no tears in the seat and hardly any wear on anything other than the plastic steering wheel and steering column. Both the wheel and column are Ford and are from the time period during which the replica was built. The plastics have faded and show some wear. Otherwise, the interior is in excellent condition! Additionally, it has more modern gauges with the text "Shay's A" written on the gauge faces. The previous owner had custom vinyl side curtains/windows made so that she could operate the Shay in any temperature weather! These are in exceptional shape as is the convertible top. Limited on space, the tilt steering wheel is a welcome addition.

If you're looking for a more streetable alternative to an actual Model A, this Shay replica could be the car for you! Where else are you going to find a Ford approved Model A pickup replica with modern ammenities like front disc brakes, rack and pinion steering, tilt wheel and an automatic transmission?
