The year 1961 was a truly historic one for Daimler-Benz AG. In
addition to marking the 35th Anniversary of the merger of Daimler
and Benz, the company also observed the 75th Anniversary of the
creation of Karl Benz's historic Patent Motorwagen. Rightly
heralded as the "Jubilee Year Mercedes," the all-new 220 SEb marked
a quantum forward leap from the 220 SE it replaced, with
modernistic yet elegant styling that would profoundly influence
Mercedes-Benz design language throughout the rest of the 1960s. A
handsome, high-prestige version of the 220 SE sedan, the two-door,
four-seat 220 SEb Coupe was soon joined by the even more-glamourous
Cabriolet.
11102310048554 presents as the ideal drivers 220, equipped with a
four-speed manual transmission and a striking livery, while
open-air touring awaits at a moment's notice. Incredibly versatile
for a grand touring or parades of elegance, additional desirable
features include a proper Becker 'Mexico' AM/FM radio, Khlmeister
air-conditioning unit and electric clock.
While the paintwork and chrome were freshened several years ago,
they've matured very well and compliment the gorgeous leather
upholstery, wool weave carpeting and lacquered woodwork. Both
engine and luggage compartments appear tidy and correct over all,
while the rear contains an original mat, 7/62 date stamped spare
tire assembly and jack. A beautifully solid and dry undercarriage
completes this fantastic car - all pans and frame rails appear
original.
48554 benefits from a late 2017 and recent 2018 mechanical
inspection and major services. These included new hydraulic clutch
master cylinder, slave cylinder, and associated hoses, while the
most recent work was performed by Mercedes-Benz specialist Gus
Kidonakis of Beverly Hill Motors. Services thoroughly addressed the
ignition and mechanical fuel injection systems, a top end
adjustment and rebuild, new stainless-steel exhaust system, cooling
system and auxiliary hoses throughout. Drivability is strong and an
absolute thrill, thanks to the 4-speed manual transmission,
suitable power and ample room for all. We would like to note the
presence of white exhaust smoke at cold starts, which dissipates at
operating temperature. Future attention/service may be required to
the engine's bottom end.
Visually stunning and ready to enjoy, this 1963 Mercedes-Benz 220
SEb is a truly important and highly influential classic
Mercedes-Benz model set for open-air enjoyment. Now available for
worldwide purchase and delivery from our Houston, Texas
showroom.
