It was 1978 and Indy 500 needed a performance car to pace the laps
at the famed Indianapolis 500 Motor Race held Memorial Day weekend
each year. They called upon the special engineers at Chevrolet to
design and build them a "Special Car" with notoriety in both paint
scheme and performance --- Thus the 78 Pace Car! Black over silver
with all silver interior Automatic Transmission Special Polished
alum wheels with distinctive red accents. Original Owner's Manual
Those 6,502 units quickly sold out to individual "Over the Window
Sticker amount". Many were taken off the streets to live a life in
the darkness of a car cover on blocks! Chevrolet built 1 for each
dealer (6,000) and a few more for their executives design staff.
L82 (the increase horse power over the base engine) Most Corvette
options were standard equipment with you ordered the Pace Car-- you
might choose the upgraded engine option (L82) or opt for the 4
speed manual transmission. A few customer like the CB radio
option!!! (remember those?) How ever your taste ran, you were an
owner of the Famed "Indy Pace Car"! The race became even more
