The Land Rover has been an icon of the British automotive industry since its introduction after WWII. With utilitarian roots, the vehicles have been put through the paces in everything from working on the farm to transporting troops in battle. Keeping that same spirit in mind, Land Rover created the Defender to continue the company’s legacy but with a more mass-market appeal. Available in 2- and 4-door versions, they were called either a “90” or a “110” in reference to the wheelbase, and were built in both right-hand and left-hand drive configurations to sell worldwide.
The first Defenders were sold new in North America starting in 1993, with several modifications to meet stricter safety and emissions regulations. Initially only the 4-door 110 model was offered, but the strategy changed the next year, with only the 2-door 90 model as the only option until 1997, which was the final year the Defender was available new in North America.
This particular 1997 Defender has covered under 46,550 miles from new, and is in excellent original and unrestored condition. It has been well-maintained throughout its life, with the most recent servicing including new springs, wheels and tires. The truck currently sports a set of 18 inch wheels wrapped in BFG tires, with matching spare mounted on the rear door. The original set of 5-spoke wheels are included with the truck as well. Under the hood is the factory 4.0-liter V8 engine, available only in the 1997 model, backed by an automatic transmission. The interior features all-original upholstery, with the factory inward-facing rear seats that fold to the side when not in use.
This Defender is an excellent example of a British classic that is quickly increasing in popularity among multiple segments of automotive enthusiasts. As well-maintained, original Defenders are becoming scarcer, their rise in popularity is sure to continue.
