For Sale: 1950 Chevrolet Stylemaster in Lithia Springs, Georgia
This 1950 Chevrolet Stylemaster coupe fits comfortably between
restored and resto-mod, keeping the spirit of the original intact
and adding a few modern convenience items to make it easy to drive,
not to mention a thundering 454 cubic inch big block under the
hood. The result is a handsome and very road-worthy car with a
unique look, all at a very affordable price.
There were big things on the horizon for Chevrolet, but in 1950,
conservative styling was still leading the way. Chrome was popular
throughout the industry, including Chevrolet, and cars like this
low-key coupe were among the most handsome cars of the year.
Finished in bright red, it isn't totally stock, but if anything,
the color accentuates the handsome shape and wonderful contours of
the Stylemaster coupe. The bodywork is in very good condition and
the way it fits together strongly suggests that this has always
been a solid, clean car that never needed major surgery. It has not
been shaved or modified, and they instead focused on getting
everything nice and flat before the paint went on, and it has a
very useful look today. It isn't perfect, but you might even be
able to call this a sleeper despite the bright red finish. There's
still plenty of chrome on it, all of it in good order, and the
two-piece wrap-around windshield is a fantastic styling statement
that was a very big deal back in the day. It's conservative, yes,
but it certainly isn't boring!
With leather bucket seats out of a late-model , the interior has a
modern vibe to it and offers room for five with a back seat that's
been upholstered to match. Custom door panels with a bit of
stainless trim look dashing, while the original dash stretches
across the front of the passenger compartment. Original gauges are
gone, replaced with cool Haneline dials specifically designed for
this application so they look almost OEM. It's great to see that
they didn't cut up the original dash to add the A/C system, which
instead hangs underneath, and a tilt steering column makes it very
easy to settle in behind the wheel. The driver's seat shows some
very minor signs of use, but the rest of the interior seems quite
fresh, including the dark carpets which provide great contrast and
tie the whole car together quite nicely. Open that sloping deck lid
and you'll find a fairly sizable trunk, also fully upholstered with
black carpets and ready for your next road trip.
Originally equipped with a smooth little inline-6, this Chevy gets
with the program complements of a burly 454 cubic inch V8. Finished
in bright Chevy Orange, it looks right at home here and runs
superbly and it's easy to see where most of the money was spent. It
features a QuickFuel 4-barrel carburetor, a mild cam, HEI ignition
system, and plenty of shiny stuff to make it look its best. Power
disc brakes and power steering were all added during the build so
it's amazingly easy to drive. However, none of that dilutes the
car's honest character and vintage driving dynamic. The original
PowerGlide 2-speed automatic was dumped in favor of a TH400 3-speed
automatic so it's notably quicker in traffic, and the factory
suspension rides beautifully. The underside is impressively clean
and tidy, and with a fresh dual exhaust system and Flowmaster
mufflers, well, there won't be any sneaking around. Corvette Rally
wheels are a low-key way to make a statement and they're wrapped in
fresh 205/70/14 front and 225/70/15 rear BFGoodrich T/A
radials.
Not stock, but not over-done, this is a cleverly updated vintage
Chevy that looks good and can be driven anywhere with confidence.
