Vehicle Description
1974 Jensen Healey Roadster
A few years before this car, Donald Healey had contacted Jensen
Motors to produce a car that would compete somewhere between the
Triumph TR-6 and the Jaguar E-Type. What resulted was a car with
50/50 weight balance, and a Lotus engine, which went on to win the
SCCA D-Production class in its first year of competition. It also
went on to be the best-selling Jensen in the history of the
company.
This Jensen Healey was redesigned, if you will, to emulate more of
a Cobra than its original iteration. A 302ci 4V V8 engine, with a
5-speed transmission, 8 inch open rear courtesy of a Mustang II,
and plenty of copper plumbing, braided nylon tubing, and various
other materials, have now turned this vehicle into a track racer,
as well as an everyday grocery getter. All this is underneath an
open fiberglass hood that accommodates the distributor, and the air
cleaner height.
Exterior is British Racing Green, with pre-painted circles where
you can place your favorite number. Leather hood straps bring back
an earlier time of racing, as well as secure the fiberglass hood to
the car under speed. Wire wheels with true knockoff hubs are all
around and in their chromed glory. Excepting the hood, the exterior
of the car remains pretty much to the original concept. Badging
adds more mystery to this car as the hood sports an AC hood badge,
a Ford Healey rear badge, and a "Powered by Ford" badge on the
front fender.
Interior has dark camel seats sitting in a black field of new
carpet. The buckets are fitted with racing seatbelts. A black vinyl
padded dash houses many gauges, toggles, and lights to keep the
driver up to date on the status of the power plant, as well as
entertained on a long trip. The floor shift lever is ergonomically
placed to expedite going through the gears.
To sum up, I'll use a Rube Goldberg quote "an extremely complicated
machine designed to carry out the extremely simple task of
constructing a consigners soul." Into which he put his heart and
soul to construct a vehicle which is uniquely his.
