Vehicle Description
This Shelby Dakota pickup was available for the 1989 model year
only and is #911 of 1,500 produced. This 149k-mile example spent
the first 17 years of its life in California. The truck is said to
have been repainted at some point and has been garaged for much of
its life. You would be hard-pressed to find a cleaner example of
the sought-after Shelby Dakota, as this truck looks more like a 49k
mile truck as opposed to its correct odometer reading. The previous
owners took pride in this vehicle, and it shows. Not only by the
obvious visual appearance, but also in the $3,920.97 in maintenance
receipts between July 6, 2018 and August 29, 2018!!!
It is powered by a 318ci V8 and features mild factory-installed
performance modifications including a lowered suspension,
limited-slip differential, and transmission oil cooler. This truck
absolutely runs and drives as well as the day it rolled off the
assembly line.
This truck is the recipient of a highly-professional paint job in
its original color and shows like new. There is not a trace of dust
in the clear, fading, fish eyes or defects of any sort. I would
venture to say this current paint is better than what was applied
in 1989 at the factory! The factory graphics were all
professionally re-installed after the re-paint, and appear to be
like new as well.
The Shelby Dakotas were given a lowered stance and blacked-out
front grille, bumpers, and lower valence with integrated fog
lights. The black trim appears unfaded throughout, and the
headlights and other lenses look clear and uncracked. The
windshield is also free and clear of any defects. The rear bumper
has been replaced with a custom roll pan that perfectly accents
this sport truck, and looks better than the factory "truck"
bumper.
The correct painted bed shows no scuffing or abrasion marks you
might find with hauling chairs and coolers to local shows. Styling
cues such as the fiberglass "light bar" and striping are
Shelby-designed additions to further accent the style of the late
80's.
The 15? hollow five-star alloys are original equipment and feature
the original hexagonal Shelby center caps. Under the rear bumper is
a space-saver spare, as well as a full sized spare with brand new
tire sitting in the bed of the truck just in case.
The badging, seat fabric, and graphics proclaim the Shelby heritage
proudly. The interior presents itself in extremely clean condition,
and is consistent with the exceptionally maintained exterior. The
headliner, carpets and dash are free from fading, cracking and any
other defects. In fact... the driver's bolster looks almost new!
The original Shelby 3-spoke steering wheel is a rare find, as most
of these have been robbed from these trucks. The A/C has recently
been serviced, and blows cold through the R-134 freon and the
original Dakota stereo works perfectly. The door panels and sills
also showcase the Shelby name, and show no signs of warping or
bends in any of the plastic and vinyl components. Even the original
Shelby floor mats are in place to protect the carpets!
Shelby Dakotas featured a 318ci V8 with throttle-body injection
adapted from the Ram full-size trucks and installed with no
modifications apart from an electric fan. The engine put power to
the rear wheels through an A500 4-speed automatic transmission with
electronic overdrive. This engine has received routine oil changes
on schedule. The engine starts and runs just as it should with no
exceptions or disappointments.
Having spent a large part of its life in California; the underside
is well-preserved and shows only light surface corrosion on the
driveshaft, leaf springs, and undersides of the frame rails. The
factory single exhaust was replaced at some point due to standard
corrosion, and was enhanced by a chrome tip. Shelby-specific
additions to the drivetrain included a limited-slip differential
and a transmission oil cooler.
This Shelby Dakota is one of only 860 produced in red and is a
garage-kept example that has been left largely unmodified over its
lifetime. Included with the truck are many original items such
as:
- Original Shelby Dakota numbered plaque
- 1989 Dakota Owner's Manual
- 1989 Dodge Warranty Pamphlet
- Shelby Dakota Owner's Manual
- 1989 Chrysler Sound System booklet
- Original Goodyear Warranty booklet
- Original keys w/ spares
The Shelby Dakota was the first modern performance sport truck
produced and paved the way for more radical trucks like the GMC
Syclone and Ford Lightning. This truck is a largely original and
preserved driver that has a unique presence all its own.
