For Sale: 1956 Mercury Montclair in San Diego, California

Vehicle Description

Offering an award winning 1956 Mercury Montclair, built by legendary restoration expert and custom hot rod builder, Jon Guilmet.

For sale is a pristine 1956 Mercury Montclair "frame on” restoration that took 1st place in the 3 out of 4 shows it has competed in. Plus 4th place at the Pomona Hot Rod Show 2016 Indoor Pavilion 5, Mild Customs category, against 25 “frame off" $!00,000+ cars.

A beautiful One-Of-A-Kind "magazine” car, this newly completed 50’s era mild custom was done with many tasteful alterations true to a ’56 Merc as highlighted in a featured article and cover in Ol' School Rodz Magazine: March 2017. Must see to appreciate how nice this car is.

First thing people comment on is how beautiful the colors are. They especially like how "subtle and classy" the 2-toned 1950’s Colonial White and Metallic Pearl Pewter custom paint job is. The clean lines are accentuated by shaving the door handles, dash, removing the oversized 13” x 10” hood ornament and 20” trunk lid lock, while adding chrome to ALL interior trim and radiator support bracket. Also added and modified are Lake Pipes with custom “Hood”, louvers and welding the seam between the front fenders and fire wall, to smooth things out nicely!

"The mild custom theme carries through to the “cruiser" drive train consisting of a 1966 Ford V8 390 engine balanced by famed Ed Hale’s racing engine shop-only 1200 miles since rebuild. A new Edelbrock Intake Manifold was added for more horsepower, backed up with re-built 1966 C6 transmission, rear-end, axles, drive shaft and custom Blue Printed modern Ididit Rack and Pinion Tilt-Wheel steering system that glides through the turns.

The 390 has all the power you need for a great ride and a loud horn to let everyone know it's coming! The car drives real smooth, especially on the freeway. All brakes are strong and grab hard!. ("See skid test results below in pictures.")

Fully restored both the electrical and fuel systems and original dash instrument gauges.

Topped off with a premium 500 Watt RMS sound system featuring the finest components, this professionally installed custom stereo system sounds amazing at any volume. Crisp and clean at both lower and higher volume. It was sound-proofed with DynaMat throughout the entire car.

With the many improvements listed below, this '56 is solid, powerful and ready to hit the road!

General Info

Custom louvered hood
Shaved door handles (Removed handles and filled in holes) then added electronic remote door lock opener. “Poppers"
Trunk lock shaved

In case of electrical failure both trunk and driver lock door are fail-safe with manual releases hidden in car.

Battery was removed from engine compartment and hidden in trunk
Built custom “hidden” storage compartment in trunk
Cut 7” x 10” holes in both kick panels and welded 2 custom metal speaker boxes tucked inside the inner fender clips. Eliminating both speaker boxes from blocking your feet.

Powder coated "like new" inner fender clips

Custom steering wheel with 2-tone leather wrap, lt. cream and black.

Custom Mercury Head centerpiece.

Sand blasted entire car down to the metal.

As a prevent measure, I personally prepped, scraped, treated and coated 100% of the following: Top of dash, interior, undercarriage and the back of the hood with 2-stage MasterSeries industrial rust preventative system. It combines a 2-stage process of Zinc Oxide and an Aluminum bonding agent used primarily on bridges to permanently seal it. To really "lock" it in, a 3rd and final coating was applied using Raptor Liner’s patented textured scratch resistant, teflon treatment.(See undercarriage pics included) *Note: The Merc still had the original undercoating from '56 on the car, which saved the bottom from any damage by corrosion, etc!

Custom Interior was pre-assembled by award winning upholstery expert, "Ron's Auto Upholstery", Pittsburgh PA

Custom '59 Ford Galaxie Sunliner arm rests replaced stock ’56 Merc arm rests. Otherwise panels are stock.

New head liner, visors, custom carpeted trunk and interior, seats and door panels.

Upholstery kit was assembled and installed by award winning "Jim's Upholstery”, San Diego

Custom Stereo System.

Interior body was completely sound proofed with Dynamat before carpeting was laid down.
High end-upgraded sound system with Kenwood KDC-898 cd player with Power booster and 2 X 12” speaker boom box woofers in trunk powered by a Rockford Fosgate 250a2. There's 2 amps and a pair of 6 x 9s hidden behind the fill. Used an Orion 4-channel along with Orion 6 x 9s for the rear deck and 5 1/4s in the front kick panels. To stop the speaker boxes from coming inside the car and sitting up against your feet, holes were cut in each kick panel, built 2 custom boxes, mounted and welded the boxes outside the body into two spaces in the inner fenders.

New chromed bumpers

All interior trim chromed.
Grill chromed
Grill shied chromed.
All exterior trim polished.

Body work by “award winning” builder and restoration expert: Jon Guiltmet

Body was blocked and prepped for paint
Head light hoods fabricated in steel so they could be welded to fender with no residual seams. This eliminates any need to fill with bondo, which eventually would cause the paint to fail and crack. Very exspensive to repaint cracked hood seams! Only a few people in the world could fabricate two hoods like this!

All air vent levers, clock, ashtray, etc.. removed from face of dash
Top of fender seams welded to body

Radio Grill on top of dash removed and filled

Fender skirts were fabricated.
Radiator dings and dents were filled and removed with lead and painted.
Lake Pipes with added custom hood that hides the first 10" of pipes.

“Original" hand pinstriped air filter cover by legendary Karl Fisk 2012.  http://lylefisk.com/ENTER.htm

FISK is a world renown pinstriper who started pin-stripping in 1955. He hung out with all the great ones including Von Dutch!! I was fortunate to have him stripe the air cleaner for the Merc!

Final body prep and assembly:

Sanding, blocking for final prime and paint plus all chrome bumper, dash and stainless trim assembly.
Painted and clear coated with top of the line PPG products.
2-tone stock 57-59 Ford Colonial White and
2013 custom metallic pewter.
