Vehicle Description
Asking a car guy about their dream car is always a risky
proposition. Some won't hesitate to gravitate toward one particular
model, but most will respond with a barrage of questions. What era?
What country of origin? What price range? In reality, choosing
favorites is becoming an increasingly complex topic. That said, one
thing is for sure: start asking about modern super cars and you'll
eventually end up talking about McLaren. When it comes to blending
technology, exclusivity and pure one-upmanship, few automakers are
doing it better. And this 2015 650S Spider is an uncompromisingly
elite offering that's so outrageous it'll make your head spin!
BRILLIANT PERSONALITY
Since Bruce McLaren first opened his doors as a manufacturer in
1963, the company has been a driving force in motorsports. Best
known for its success in Formula 1, McLaren has also won the Le
Mans 24 Hour race, dominated Cam-Am racing and won Indianapolis
multiple times. Eventually, the idea of a no compromises road car
was born, and models like this incredible 650S were simultaneously
produced beside winning motorsports bids at McLaren's Woking
Technical Center.
When it comes to this 650S, you'd better be an extrovert, or an
introvert with a strong desire to switch teams, if you're planning
to take the car home. It certainly grabs attention, firing up
conversations wherever it's driven. That appeal begins with classic
mid-engine proportions, only to be elevated by impressive Tarocco
Orange paint and optional carbon fiber accenting. And a sculpted
profile displays precise fit and excellent finish under ancillary
hardware that functions well and seals great.
BRILLIANT ENGINEERING
With a design mantra that includes form following function, it made
sense for McLaren's engineers to tap their expertise as the
automotive world's leading purveyors of carbon fiber technology.
Every lesson learned, from being the first F1 team to race a carbon
fiber chassis to today's latest modeling, was used to create a
unique carbon fiber monocell. In a world where weight is the enemy,
McLaren was able to produce a tub with more strength and rigidity
that any of its competitors' aluminum space frames. And, weighing
in at only 165 pounds, it was both light and strong. The idea was
simple: eliminate compromise. Make everything lightweight and
strong, and give the driver performance, economy, handling and
comfort. Stab the throttle and power spins through a 7-speed,
dual-clutch Seamless Switch Gearbox that clicks off gears in as
little as 60 milliseconds. Step on the other pedal and you'll
encounter multi-piston calipers that efficiently utilize carbon
ceramic rotors under the careful supervision of
confidence-inspiring Brake Steer. Electromechanical power steering
leads an aluminum, double wishbone suspension where interconnected
dampers hydraulically adjust the car's ride between Normal, Sport
or Track settings. And everything rolls on Charcoal wheels, which
crank 235/35ZR19 Pirelli P Zero Corsas in front of 305/30ZR20
Pirelli P Zero Corsas.
BRILLIANT PEP
The engine is equally impressive. A 3.8 liter twin turbo V8 which
spins 641 horsepower into 502 lb./ft. of torque, it powers the car
to an impressive 2.9 second 0 to 60 time. Developed in cooperation
with England's Ricardo plc, the M838T is a lightweight and
relatively compact powerplant that's positioned deep in its chassis
to maximize the 650S low center of gravity. That means, with the
help of this Spider's sticky Corsa tires, a good driver can achieve
over 1g of cornering capability. That excellent cornering
capability is sustained through world-class engineering that
includes Nikasil cylinder liners, dry-sump lubrication and variable
valve timing for both the car's intake and exhaust valves. And it
all sounds great thanks to optional sport exhaust.
BRILLIANT LUXURY
Opening the single-hinge, lightweight doors really drives home
McLaren's philosophy of 'nothing without purpose'. Controls for
dual-zone air conditioning sit just inside the driver's power
window, allowing a slimmer center console that positions the driver
and passenger closer to the center axis of the car. That carbon
fiber center stack, part of an optional carbon fiber appearance
package, centers touchscreen infotainment on an Alcantara-trimmed
dash. That dash seals simple telemetry behind cool orange accent
lighting and straight, body-matched stitching. The driver spins a
leather-wrapped carbon fiber steering wheel in front of aluminum
pedals, Meridian speakers and aluminum paddle shifters. And the
driver and passenger enjoy heated, power-adjusted memory seats.

In the modern era, McLaren is the hobby's choice purveyor of the
world's most intense sports cars. And this excellent 650S presents
the perfect opportunity to experience the brand at its very best.
While rarity doesn't always ensure collectability, it's safe to say
that any road-going McLaren is exactly the kind of car that will
