Wow! Not just your run of the mill Achieva, this model boasts a W41
High Output Quad 4 DOHC (16 valve) engine that produces 190 horses
@ 6800 rpm, and 160 lb. - ft. of torque @ 5200 rpm. This example,
designed for high performance, is one of only 1,146 units built in
1992.
Looking at this car from the standpoint of being born in 1992, it's
a very solid and clean car. It should be, having had only one owner
and under 18,000 miles. The exterior panels are as straight and
smooth as it gets and the cloth interior looks as it did the day it
left the dealership. And did we mention how clean the car is?
The W41 powered SCX was produced by Oldsmobile to be a race car.
They had to make 1,000 production cars to homoligize them for
"showroom stock" racing the likes of IMSA Firehawk and SCCA
GRAND-AM World Challenge. 1146 were produced in 1992. This included
the move to smaller diameter yet wider V-rated P215/60VR-14 BF
Goodrich Comp T/A tires on 14x6.5 inch cast aluminum wheels
(compared to the SC's 205/55R-16 on 16x6 inch wheels) and different
suspension components on the SCX-specific FX3 RPO coded suspension.
The suspension changes included larger diameter direct-acting front
sway bar over the base Achieva, a wider rear axle with dual rear
sway bars, "Computer Command Ride" (CCR) electronically adjustable
struts and shock absorbers, as well as higher spring rates and
bushing changes.
Kurt Shubert, owner of this car and president of Automotive History
Preservation Society had this to say: "The SCX's powertrain
included the highest output naturally aspirated four-cylinder
engine GM had produced up to that time, the 190-horsepower, 160
lbft torque W41 version of Oldsmobile's Quad 4 engine. Compared to
the SC's standard high-output, 180-horsepower LGO Quad 4, the W41
version of the LGO Quad 4 was fitted with different camshafts, a
low restriction exhaust system with dual mufflers and a special
engine computer calibration for the ignition and fuel systems that
also raised the engine's redline to 7200 rpm. This engine was
complemented by a unique version of the Getrag-licensed, GM-Muncie
built Getrag 282 five-speed transmission with special second and
fifth gears as well as a different final drive ratio for quicker
acceleration and better gearing to keep the engine in its power
band, mated to a concentric slave clutch.
This '92 SCX is one of 218 in Black. About 11,000 of its 17,xxx
miles were added during the first 4 years going to shows and
events. Kept in climate controlled building for the last 15 years,
it's never seen winter weather. This cars has been driven, but at
the same time preserved. Everything is original on it except for
fluids, filters, and battery. The original V-rated BF Goodrich
tires and wheels were removed with about 10,000 miles and stored,
and are included. New and close to original BF Goodrich tires were
mated to correct SCX factory wheel and are now on the car.
This SCX was a parade car in the 1997 Oldsmobile 100th Birthday
meet in Lansing, MI in 1997. Documentation of this and other
documentation like the window sticker are included.
