Vehicle Description
1976 Cadillac Sedan DeVille
The name "DeVille" is derived from the French de la ville or de
ville meaning "of the town". In French coach building parlance, a
coup de ville, from the French couper (to cut) i.e. shorten or
reduce, was a short four-wheeled closed carriage with an inside
seat for two and an outside seat for the driver and this smaller
vehicle was intended for use in the town or city (de ville).
They say everything is bigger in Texas, although this Caddy's
presence in the Classic Auto Mall showroom, this writer would beg
to differ. All 19.16 feet of this bundle of Detroit iron, can whisk
you down the road so smoothly, you will not even know you are
moving, all in pillowed velour comfort. This example with a mere
20,594 miles (thought to be original) presents in good
condition.
Exterior
Paint code 37 points to the exterior being Claret Metallic Red and
appears to be a repaint. Steel throughout this car appears original
to the car, and paint except for where noted is in very good
condition. Passenger hood appears to have slight rippling, Small
bubbling is seen on passenger upper door panel. The roof of the car
is undamaged and appears unmarried. Near the center of the massive
hood on the driver's side are 3 paint chips pencil eraser size are
seen. Original hub caps are unmarried, lighting all intact and
working. Viewing the underside of the car reveals typical surface
rust, undercoating and over all very nice condition patina
suspension and frame.
Interior
Cadillac Light Buckskin Velour cushion inserts and vinyl bolsters
covers the interior seating, and for added plush, a touch of
pillowing has been placed in the seat cushions for even more
sinking into them. 20,594 miles are shown on the odometer, and
typical mid-seventies square and variation thereof design motif is
present with the gauge clusters, and driver controls. Floor
carpeting appears in good condition and again not out of the
ordinary for a low mileage, only driven on Sunday car. Power
conveniences all operational, as well as electrics. Door panels
present with faux veneer, and vinyl over a lower panel of carpeting
that matches the flooring. Headliner is in very good condition and
is dimpled pattern vinyl.
Drivetrain
A 500ci V8 with a 4-barrel carburetor accelerates and moves this
bunch of sculpted steel down the road. Engine compartment is very
clean, with slight corrosion is seen on aluminum parts. A TH400
automatic transmission shifts smoothly and the car is suspended by
double A arm front, and coil spring rear suspension. Tires are
virtually new and have recently been updated.
This long and wide luxury was all the rage to show success in the
pre-euro invasion era. The bigger the better, and gas mileage be
damned, although emissions were taken seriously. GM went under the
assumption that if you could afford the car, you can afford the gas
to put into it. A closer personal inspection is needed to
appreciate this Cadillac that is Dy-No-Myte!
