Vehicle Description
1938 Buick Special
Back in the year when Errol Flynn immortalized Robin Hood, when
Walt Disney dazzled the world with Snow White, when Glenn Miller
music was coming into full swing, and Bingo was becoming the latest
rage, the 1938 Buick Special was just about the most exciting thing
this side of Lana Turner's sweater closet!
This 1938 marque mid-size Buick entry level vehicle is a wonderful
running vehicle that the consigner has used for 700 to 900 mile
rallies, with virtually no mechanical problems. A ride around the
Classic Auto Mall complex was wonderfully smooth, with sounds of a
30's classic car transmission going up through the gears, as well
as cushy suspension made it a pleasurable experience.
Exterior
Patina maroon 2-Door Sedan with virtually no dents, and very
minimal surface rust seen on the hood hinges covers this car.
Chrome bumpers and brightwork has aged beautifully and shows well.
Contrasting black bullet style headlights, and fender mounted turn
signals adorn the front of the car. Black running boards integrate
to the fenders, and for 1938 can be seen getting smaller. A
wonderful hump back trunk compartment giver the car a nice
finishing line to the back of the car. Art Deco style brightwork,
handles, and grill are all in good condition. Wide white sidewall
tires, virtually new, are capped by Buick nameplate moon style
hubcaps. Glass is showing some de-lamination but is not severe
enough to impede any driving vision.
Interior
Consigner states that interior is original camel color mohair, and
there is plenty of it on both front and rear bench seats, door
panels, headliner, and even door jambs have a hint of it next to
the wind lace and beading. Upper door panels and dash are painted a
beautiful yellow custard and highlight the camel mohair. Dash
presents perfectly with the Art Deco style instrumentation, and
original banjo steering wheel are working together to create the
"look". A glovebox clock, as well as creme Bakelite knob covers,
and door mini panels coordinate with lush camel carpeting all in
very good condition complete the interior.
Drivetrain
The Buick Dynaflash straight eight, aka the Fireball 8, 248ci
engine stretches the length of the engine bay and looks clean as a
whistle. A single barrel carburetor, topped by an oil bath air
filter, and a 3-speed transmission, put plenty of smooth power to
the high ratio differential. Not a high-speed cruiser, but a solid
combination, that allows you to go forever...until you use the
hydraulic disc brakes on all 4 wheels!
This 1938 Buick Super is a very nice example of this model and
year. Mechanically very sound, interior very comfortable, and great
styling. Literally can be run all day and was, for rally's around
the Pittsburgh area. Consigner says it may need a muffler, as its
patched (see underpinning photos) but otherwise roll right out of
the mall and into the late 30's where you can motor to the twin
spires and witness Sea Biscuit beat War Admiral.
