55 "HANDYMAN" Resto-WagonImagine if you can a vehicle so stunning
that it draws a crowd when it rolls up on the sand at Malibu Beach
or parked "up front" in the Valet Circle at the Beverly Hills Hotel
on Sunset Boulevard. This is the kind of unique one-off rides that
is nearly impossible to walk or drive by without squeezing off a
double take or three. The owner's unique personality and style
are all wound into this vision of old classic beauty modern
luxurious road warrior and family hot rod/beach cruiser/SUV. It
is nearly impossible to describe this custom modified modern show
car conversion by Bill Burton. Perfection is a naughty word to
throw around when it comes to automotive anything. This vehicle
exudes perfection; in design in workmanship appearance performance
handling and ride quality. Perfection abounds in this 55 two-door
classic "Handyman" wagon. You can see it feel it hear it and smell
it. There is a unique perfection in this over-all masterpiece.
This uniqueness comes from the blend of new modern mechanical and
electronic technology to the grace and elegance of a 50's rare
classic (less than 1200 two-door wagons in 1955). Just the right
touches from a modern tilt steering column with the original
steering wheel (in 13" custom diameter) with power/tilt steering.
From the gorgeous Bill Burton custom designed radiator and support
system to the wonderful installation of leather and Vintage Air
Conditioning vents under the classic dash to the perfect location
of the CD Changer under the back seat. Just the right touches of
modern and classic abound at every corner and quality inch of this
brand new condition automobile.Absolutely stunning body panel fit
and paintwork catch your eye first followed by the distinct blast
of "leather" air as you enter this marvelous machine. The leather
coachwork so fittingly wraps around your body you feel as though
you slipped into the cockpit of a brand new Rolls Royce. The
interior coachwork is nearly flawless from paint finish to carpet
and headliner installation. Take a look at some of the little
close-up pictures I took in the corners of the windshield back
wrap-around trim pieces inside and out. The fit and finish is
still nearly concour even though ten years have passed since this
beauty was completely restored.I am helping a friend sell this
resto-mod from his collection. I have been taking cars apart and
building them for over 40 years. I have been a car collector for
all that time and spend a lot of my time in various collector clubs
judging many a concour meet here in Southern CA. This is one of
the finest builds I have ever been around. Bill Burton is one of
the preeminent builders in Southern California and this car was
completely built by Bill. The paint was applied by Mark Mahood.
Driving a Performance Hot Rod like this one starts with a quick
turn of the key which lights up the sound of a gentle thunder
emanating from below. The balanced and blue-printed 400 small
block comes alive without the slightest hesitation. Placing it in
gear finds a quick snap into gear with the astonishing 700R4
four-speed automatic transmission and just the right amount of
rumble from the Custom Exhaust as you accelerate from stopped. Not
too loud not too quiet perfection. How did they do this??Driving
the car is best described as a sensual experience. Tell it to go
FAST and it thunders at the slightest touch to the accelerator.
Roll the seat back and settle into the open road with the ride
quality of a Mercedes Benz S Class. This is a Motorcar that can do
almost anything you want it to do. Throw your surfboard in the
back or throw the kids in your 1955 "Grand Touring" Wagon and drive
to the Grand Canyon on an Adventure Vacation. Who needs an SUV
when you have this rig. Remember this is a modern car from
suspension to drive-train to modern driving conveniences such as
power steering power disc brakes power windows power door locks
modern stereo and CD player and air conditioning. And IT'S A HOT
ROD TOO. This beauty has it all. "The allure surrounding black
cars is almost a century old. Some would say that nothing looks
better than a spotless black automobile from the 50's or 60's.
Every painter loves to take on a great project as long as the
project doesn't involve spraying black paint. Herein folks lies
the truth... if you want to see if a painter has the necessary
skills ask to see a finished black paint job." It will tell the
tale just as our gorgeous 55 does. Over One Year of hard work
went into this project built by Bill & Brian Burton at Burton's
Classics and painted by the renowned Mark Mahood at Mahood's Auto
Body both shops in Stanton California. The plan was to build a 55
Chevy Two Door Wagon that was a practical street machine with all
the modern goodies for LA driving with enough power to plant the
driver right into the seat. Except for the lowered modern
suspension and cool retro-styled wheels this 55 looks just as it
did the day it rolled off the showroom floor. Oh did I mention the
"perfect" amount of tint on the windows Gray Smoke to be exact.
Most hardcore automotive fans of muscle or rodding will admit
that the wheel and tire combo make it or break it when examining
the overall look of a really cool car. With that in mind 17" Intro
Wheels and Wide Tires were chosen to fill the wheel-wells and give
that mean road race appearance. Its aggressive stance is derived
from a 3-inch drop in the front and a 4-inch drop in the rear.
This little gem has been owned by two very particular
collectors. The car has not ever seen rain and never spent a night
out in the elements. It has barely seen sunlight and the exterior
paint & chrome look like the day they were applied. There is no
fade to the interior leather gauges or stainless work. Whether
you are donning a pair of Board Shorts or a Tuxedo you will always
feel just right in this once in a life-time Dream Machine.Driving
this gorgeous 55 has been an experience that I will always
remember. I only wish I had the money to park it permanently in MY
garage. There was between $130 - $140K billed on this
restoration. Plan on spending $150 - $175K to do one just like it
today. This car needs to be sold and is being offered in a No
Reserve Format. California Black Plates do not come with the car;
