1990 Honda Prelude Si (4WS) Coupe: The 3rd generation Honda Prelude Si 4WS was the first mass-production automobile from a major automaker to feature four-wheel steering. Furthermore, while rival automakers like Mazda, Nissan, and Mitsubishi were working on four-wheel steering systems of their own, each relied on solenoids and computers to change the angle of the rear wheels, based on sensors which read the steering angle of the front wheels. Honda’s system was strictly mechanical, which made it both elegant and complex at the same time, yet gave drivers precise control under a wide variety of driving conditions. To accomplish this, the Prelude 4WS utilized both front and rear steering boxes with a steering shaft running beneath the car and linking the two. The rear steering box used hypocycloid gear to accomplish the complex, steering wheel-driven positioning of the rear wheels, which were ultimately moved with conventional linkages.
This 1990 Honda Prelude Si 4WS was sold new in California and resided on the west coast until late in 2017. The Honda made its way to Texas in September 2017, and has modified it with a set of adjustable D2 Racing coilovers, 15″ JNC wheels, and a custom exhaust system. The third generation Prelude was the first car sold in the United States with active four wheel steering, and power is provided by a 2.0-liter inline-four paired to a 5-speed manual transmission. Recent servicing included fresh fluids within the last 3k miles, and the clutch and timing belt have also been replaced. The brakes, thermostat, steering rack, and shift bushings are all new as well. The exterior is finished in Frost White and features black beltline and bumper trim. A full custom exhaust system is fitted, including stainless steel headers and stock-style twin outlets visible under the rear bumper. Third generation Preludes feature double wishbone suspension and disc brakes front and rear. Suspension modifications include a set of D2 Racing adjustable coilovers and an upper strut tower bar. The cabin is upholstered in black leather and features interior panels and seats from an Australian-market Prelude Si. The door and and rear interior panels feature off-white leather inserts, and the seller has fitted new Pioneer speakers throughout. An Alpine stereo is currently equipped, and a stock steering wheel with cruise control buttons is fitted. A complete list of options a features include; 2.0L 16v Inline 4 Cyl Engine, 5 Speed, Cold A/C, ABS Brakes, Cruise Control, Mugen Floormats, Heated Leather Seats, Power Steering/Brakes, Power Windows/Locks/Mirrors, Power Sunroof, Rear Spoiler, Rear Window Defroster, Alpine AM/FM/Cassette (just for that 90's look), Bluetooth, Tilt Steering, Tinted Glass, 15"JNC Rims, and a new set of Toyo Proxes 195/45/R15 Tires.
