Vehicle Description
Motorcar Studio is pleased to offer this awesome 1978 International
Scout II Traveler Midas Edition. Among the most interesting Scout
II variants ever offered, the Midas Scouts rode the conversion van
wave that swept the country in the late 1970s. International
Harvester contracted with the Midas Conversion Van Company from
1977 through 1980 to transform an ordinary Scout into a plush
family hauler, complete with swiveling bucket seats with armrests,
shag carpet and custom upholstery and headliners. The
long-wheelbase Traveler came equipped with a third-row seat that
folds flat to make a kid-sized bed.
This truck has been repainted once to a very nice standard in the
original color of Winter White with brown accent stripes, but is
otherwise a remarkably original and well-preserved example. Nearly
new 31x10.50 BF Goodrich all terrains on stock steel wheels with
factory hubcaps in excellent condition. A dry Texas truck, the body
is straight and solid and the floors, rockers and cab supports are
in pristine original condition with zero rust (the underside has
not been undercoated so you know it's not hiding anything - see
photos). Spectacular, mostly original interior with the exception
of new carpet. Excellent dash, door panels, headliner and seat
upholstery. The front seats tilt and swivel, the second row seats
tilt and slide fore and aft, and the third row seat folds flat into
a bed. All gauges are clear and working. Original AM/FM radio in
the dash also works.
Under the hood is an IH 345 cubic inch V8 mated to a TorqueFlite
727 automatic transmission. Recent belts, hoses, fluids, tune-up,
electronic ignition (Pertronix) conversion, engine reseal,
transmission service, four-wheel power disc brakes, rebuilt
steering box. Runs and drives exceptionally well; steering is tight
and responsive, brakes feel great, and due to a stock suspension
with no lift, the ride quality is excellent. In order to keep the
engine bay as original as possible, the original York A/C
compressor was retained (which is both noisy and inefficient).
Should the next owner choose, better A/C performance can easily be
obtained by switching to a Sanden-style rotary compressor, as the
rest of the A/C components are in excellent working order.
With its clean white exterior, this Traveler manages to be both
timeless and unassuming - but upon opening the door, you're
transported back to the late 1970s in all its shag-carpeted glory.
