Vehicle Description
1958 Chevrolet Apache Pickup
The vehicle for the working man, a utility hauler, the "pick up"
truck came to be with Henry Ford's Model T which came with an open
bed that could carry large cargo from one place to another. Pick up
from one location and take to another. A simple idea that has grown
to be the most popular selling vehicle type across the US.
This 1958 Chevrolet Apache Pickup Truck is a refreshing example of
an original design, not chopped, not "smashed", not hot rodded, not
embellished with flames, or chrome mags, or a hood scoop sticking
out. Original design, tastefully redone in beautiful metallic deep
Gulf of Mexico Green/Blue with correct white trim and an original
peppering of chrome badging. A true working example, not spotless
or pristine, but restored to a clean original version with a gained
over time patina.
Exterior
Looking like it was dipped in a vat of deep, deep, green/blue
metallic, the exterior metal has been restored to straight and
true. Slight imperfections, chips, and some aging add to the pure
utilitarian function of this pickup truck. White grille and bumper
trim, which shows some areas of thinning, are correct schemes for
this year of the Apache model. Chrome badging, mirrors, signal
trim, door handles, and gas cap are in good used condition. A white
contrasting cab roof tops off the iconic Chevrolet wrap around
windshield. The bed has been redone in pine 1 x 4 boards stained
brownish/red and is divided by body color metal dividers.
Interior
A black vinyl bench seat sits in the sea of green blue metallic
metal interior, door panels and black rubber flooring. Use would
best describe this truck, and the job site residue has worked its
way into the ribs of the rubber flooring, and pedals, which are in
good condition. A fan shaped speedometer, gauge cluster sits behind
an original steering wheel, that has been finished by years of hard
working hands grasping on to it. A stamped area has cutouts for a
radio, but it was never installed.
Drivetrain
An original 235CI in line 6-cylinder engine is mounted firmly in a
cavernous engine compartment, which is devoid of all the modern
trappings of any electronics, emission control hoses, and anything
else that prevents the average owner from doing their own
"wrenching." A 1-barrel carburetor is mounted and has an oil bath
air cleaning system. A 3 on the tree manual transmission gets the
truck rollin' down the road. Solid axle semi elliptic springs in
front, and semi elliptic springs make up the trucks suspension.
Drum brakes are present on all wheels, and the passenger's rear
wheel appears to have a seal leaking. A full set of 205/75 R15
tires capped by Chevy chrome moon hubcaps finish the look.
A true worker bee restored to a wonderful example of a personal
interpretation of a 1958 Apache Pickup. If you are looking for an
immaculate example to take to a show, this is not your pickup. If
you are looking for a really "cool" restoration which shows flaws
of work, but retains a really nice appearance, runs great, and
looks original, take a closer gander at this truck.
