For Sale: 1979 Ferrari 512 in Englewood, Colorado

Vehicle Description

Ferrari’s revolutionary replacement for the legendary 365GTB/4 Daytona was this flat-twelve coupe using the same engine design developed for their Formula One cars. This horizontally-opposed twin-cam engine was a powerhouse in its day, fed by four triple-throat Weber carburetors and its mid-ship placement gave the car phenomenal balance and handling. Boxers have always been desirable Ferrari collectables and have been trading in the mid-six-figures for years, but recent caution in the market has brought them significantly lower and created an attractive opportunity. By now, almost all have been modified, restored (some much better than others), taken apart and redone by a myriad of hands—and some were more skilled than others.

This car is a very well-preserved survivor, with original paint & interior, its original factory engine and a years-long history of diligent maintenance. There have been no past accidents or rust. It was federalized by Amerispec, but was recently brought back to full European specification by Wayne Obry’s Motion Products, one of the most respected Ferrari restoration shops in the world. The owner wanted to have a completely authentic BB that was mechanically superb and ready for any of the popular 1000-mile tours. The engine has been completely overhauled, the transaxle synchos are excellent and the entire chassis from brakes to suspension has been gone through. The 50K km (31,000 miles) is the original mileage, the air conditioning is cold (!) and even the clock keeps good time!  No ‘80s add-on junk like alarms or intrusive stereo systems, and we have the original books & both tool sets.

This is one of the best-driving Boxers available today—not a static collection curio that barely runs, like so many—and can only be appreciated by someone who wants a vintage Ferrari to drive, not gawk at.  The interior is completely original, and as such, is showing its age.  In truth, the car should have a complete interior redo to match the quality of the car’s body and chassis. The good news, though, is that the buyer will have the freedom to create his vision of what it should be. Don’t like all-black? Then go tan, red or grey, maybe with contrasting Daytona-style seat stripes. There are several period choices that would personalize the car to your tastes and still be an authentic BB…and our shop excels at Ferrari interior restoration work!
