For Sale: 1947 Ford 2-Dr Coupe in Fredericksburg, Virginia

Vehicle Description

A Nice Surprise

All too often these early post-war cars look, smell and drive like “old cars” and not “classic cars”.  This 1947 Ford Super Deluxe is a notable exception.  It is an attractively styled car without any of the sensory reminders of an older car; and it starts, runs and stops like a much more recent classic.  The engine and transmission are quiet and smooth-running and a delight to drive from the first time you press the starter button.

Numerous Trophies

This is a car that has driven away with a bunch of trophies at Virginia car shows in the past couple of years.  And “driven away” is the correct phrase because the car’s owner enjoyed driving this classic to and from the shows as much as the trophies awarded to the car.

1947 Ford—Frame-off Restoration

This Ford was treated to a great restoration but retains its originality.  Unlike many of these cars that were rodded, this Super Deluxe coupe is like going back to the Ford showroom right after World War II.   The car is as clean as a pin and drives better than new with a 12-volt conversion, a re-done heating system, power brake booster and an electric fuel pump.

They don’t get any Nicer!

  • Paint and Chrome

The black paint is in good condition with a few stone chips and blemishes that mark it as a car that has been enjoyed.   The paint gleams and shows off this coupe’s great lines.

Almost all of the chrome was redone or replaced and gives a fresh look to this Super Deluxe Ford.

The body and underside of the car are free of rust and it is clear from the condition of the underside that this car has travelled few miles since it was the subject of a full restoration (see pictures).

  • Interior

The seat upholstery was all redone in period-correct gray fabric that makes an excellent contrast with the black exterior.  The door panels are in very good condition.  The gray headliner has been replaced as has the carpet.  There is some wear on the finish around the windows.  The black rubber mats—front and trunk—are all marked as “Ford” products.

  • Engine

The car’s flat-head V-8 (100 hp) sits nestled in a detailed engine bay.  It starts and runs much as it first did when the car was built—quiet and smooth. The car was converted to a 12-volt system and an electric fuel pump was added to insure quick starts even if the car hasn’t been run in several days.

  • Transmission

The 3-speed standard transmission shifts properly and smoothly.

  • Tires, Brakes, Safety and Monitoring Systems

This Ford has 4 wide whitewall  tires that look virtually new.   The bias ply spare has never been on the ground!

The car benefits from the safety of a dual-line power brake upgrade together with a power booster, enabling the Ford to more easily stop in current driving conditions.

All of the engine/systems monitoring gauges (temperature, fuel, amp and oil pressure) appear to work properly.  Similarly, the speedometer works, as do the lights, horn, and turn signals (yes, turn signals).  The original radio will need attention, and the clock is stuck in 1947.

An Excellent Example of a very early Post-War Ford

This Ford is a fully-restored (frame-off)—and unmolested—example of the very popular 1947 Super Deluxe series—a car that returning GIs were rushing to buy.    These original cars are in high demand but short supply.  They therefore represent not just a great driving experience but a sound investment as well.  And if there was ever a car that transports you back to the post-war period, this is it. Apart from the investment value of this car, it is hard to put a price on the feeling of enjoyment when other drivers and pedestrians wave and give you a “thumbs up.”
