Here we have an original, unmolested, rust free and great
running example of the iconic 1940 Ford Deluxe Coupe. This car was
recovered from long term storage, mechanically refreshed and put
back on the open road where it belongs. All steel and sporting its
legendary Flathead V8 engine it puts its power to the rear wheels
through its "three on the tree" manual transmission.
This car was certainly restored, maybe three decades or more ago.
Soon there after it found its way into the hands of a California
collector/hoarder known to buy the best examples he could find,
drive them home, take the family on a ride and then park them in
one of his climate controlled buildings that ranged from Idaho to
Texas. Along with a few of his other great cars, this Ford was
purchased from his estate in 2017. Like the others, all it needed
to look like it does today was a good wash and buff. Mechanically,
the fuel tank was cleaned, fuel lines replaced and the carbs
serviced. The distributor was reconditioned, plugs and wires
replaced. The water pumps and drive belts were replaced. The brakes
received new wheel cylinders, hoses and master cylinder. A new
6-volt battery and a fresh set of radial tires were
installed.
Now, with a push of a button, the flathead comes calmly to life and
settles into a lopey idle. The transmission shifts smoothly. Second
gear exploits every bit of torque the big lump delivers and sounds
great doing it. It rolls drama free at interstate speeds, that is
so long as you ignore the attention it draws. By today's standards
the steering and brakes are adequate at best but they contribute to
the throwback experience that operating this 78 year old timepiece
is all about.
The condition of this car is nothing short of extraordinary. It is
neither overly restored nor tired in the least. It just is what it
is, was and will always be, a '40 Ford Coupe, and that's a very
good thing.
