Known Ownership History
One of 1672 Turbos Built, Never Sold to the USA
History
This turbo has benefited from careful ownership throughout its
life. Sold new to a resident in Verona, Italy. The turbo received
major services at a BMW/Ferrari dealership in Catania, Italy in
1988. It was then sold to Alaimo Gaetano of Enna, Sicily. The car
remained in Alaimo's care and was reportedly in static storage
until 2001 when it was sold to a US collector Clarence "Chip" E
Steele of Beaufort, SC on February 19, 2001 the odometer read
81,000 KM's. Chip replaced the fuel tank with an OEM 70 liter unit
and imported the car to the US when his tour ended in Naples.
On March 12, 2002 Christopher Provo of San Francisco, CA purchased
the Turbo now with 84,222 KM's and a two-year long restoration was
commissioned by renowned 02 specialist Casey Motorsports.
In 2008 it was sold to Michael Briones of Novato, CA on August 6,
2008
The last owner of record was BMW collector Jeff Kearl of San
Clemente, CA who purchase the turbo from Michael on October 23,
2010.
Restoration
Casey Motorsports in Petaluma, CA was entrusted to perform a
thorough restoration, with work performed emphasized on
mechanicals. The engine and transmission were rebuilt, a new OEM
turbo was installed, a new LSD was installed, new spoiler, new
Alpina quick ratio steering box. Photos of the extensive work are
included with the sale as well as on Casey Motorsports website.
Parts totaled $29,527.54 not including labor! The interior is
mostly original with the exception of the door panels which where
replaced. And period correct BBS wheels were installed. Post
restoration the car was shown at BMW events throughout California.
Carl from La Jolla Independent serves as a vintage BMW technical
director for BMW/CCA believes this is one of the finest 2002
Turbo's in existence.
Today
The turbo remains well kept mechanically excellent. Steering is
tight, braking is firm, and the acceleration is very good and only
gets better when the turbo kicks in. The underside of the car is
exceptionally clean and the paint although no longer concours is of
high quality. All lights, swtiches, gauges are working as they
should.
02 Turbos have been admired by sportscar enthusiast for decades and
have now captured the attention of serious collectors. To find such
a high-quality example available stateside today is a rare
occurrence. If you have been searching for the right 02 Turbo we
strongly recommend serious attention to this example.
