For Sale: 1947 Ford Sportsman in La Jolla, California

Vehicle Description

Although an older restoration, it is still in outstanding condition with beautiful paint and chrome trim. One of the few well cared for examples still with the original wood in fabulous condition! Recent motor service completed by Ford Sportsman Woody expert Tim Krehbiel (Los Angeles, California) included engine tune, power window and convertible top electrics and hydraulics. Overdrive, throttle and choke adjustments, radio, instruments, new battery and more.  The work totaled more than $15,000. A well-known example, having spent years in California, this car is ready to drive and bring a smile to your face.

In Tom Garrett’s Rolodex and the Sportsman Registry – Seventy-One Society. Known to service expert Tim Krehbiel for the past 25 years. Featured on the jacket of Don Post’s book. Has old California yellow and black plates.

After World War II, Ford wanted to inspire buyers to return to their showrooms and have a more interesting car than Chrysler or General Motors. They did this with the new 1946 Ford Sportsman Super Deluxe Woody Convertible. It was Ford’s most expensive and advanced car of the era. It was successful in drawing attention to Ford as a car company on the move with an exceptional car. Only 3,692 were built from 1946-48. Today, they are highly sought after by collectors for their rarity, styling and build quality. It is believed less than 500 remain.

Features: Flathead V8 239.4 cubic inches, 100 HP, 3-speed manual transmission with overdrive. Hydraulic brakes, power windows, power convertible top. Radio, sun visors. Beautifully crafted solid wood framing with wood inserts using the best birch, maple and mahogany.

Known Owners include:

  • Gordon Chamberlin, publisher of Ford Life Magazine
  • Albert Guibara, sculptor with bronze work displayed in and around San Francisco
  • Barry Konier, noted Southern California Woody collector

Konier owned this Sportsman for nearly 20 years.
