This fabulous Lagonda Rapide, car No. Z11450, is the embodiment of
mid-thirties English motoring at its finest; the new M45R model was
based on a 10ft 3inch chassis mated to a Meadows six-cylinder 4.5
liter engine capable of a healthy 120bhp. When fitted with the open
four seat tourer T9 coachwork the list price in 1935 was circa
1,000 equivalent to the cost of a small house!
Supplied new in 1935 by the Mayfair distributor Gaffikin Wilkinson,
the ownership history of CGO 62, it's affectionately-referred to UK
registration number, is known throughout its whole life. This
includes Lagonda Club track events at Silverstone and other British
road rallies in the early fifties when owned by L.G. Michaels and
followed by 59 years of long term custodianship from 1954-2013 when
owned by Group Captain Rexford-Welch, who was a much-distinguished
radio biologist.
CGO 62 was subsequently gifted to a specialist Lagonda restorer in
the UK and who carefully rescued the car from hibernation and began
an exacting full restoration. This resulted in being placed 2nd in
Class at the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance 2017, Bridgehampton
Track show 2017 and Amelia Island d'Elegance this year. The Lagonda
was also the first US entry home on the 2017 Mille Miglia arriving
in 72nd position from a field of 450 cars.
A truly handsome motor car, offered with lovely supporting history
documentation and fitted with twin side mounted spares, full
tonneau, twin driving lamps and fold-flat screen with Brooklands
aero screens, and currently eligible for all of the world's great
road rallies.
