Vehicle Description
Here is your chance to own the first postwar Mercury produced. The
styling and a flathead V8 made it an instant success and continues
to make it a desirable collector car. Several key words and phrases
that describe this car are; original, survivor, classic, well
maintained, repaired, rebuilt, replaced with NOS or factory
original reproduction, well documented. Ask your salesperson about
the very nicely detailed history and spec sheet on this car. It
shows how a car like this "survives" with proper care and
maintenance.
Ushering in a new trend that was the precursor of modern automotive
styling, this 1950 Mercury moved away from running boards and
separate fenders, to enclose the full width and length of the car
in an uninterrupted envelope. The results are literally a classic
design. The suicide doors are a unique, interesting, and fun
feature. The original paint is there but hiding under a couple
resprays it received during its life. The chrome and trim shows
well but is faded a bit as would be expected on a survivor car with
the front and rear bumpers being the exception. They have been
replaced at some point and shine quite nicely. Above the front
bumper is a toothy grill, Mercury in script on the hood just under
a coat of arms badge, with an awesome hood ornament topping it all
off. All those curvy body lines converge smoothly at the back with
a trunk emblem and Mercury in script over a sharp looking bumper
with dual exhaust tips peeking out from under it.
When you open the door you will find an interior right in character
with the rest of the car. The upholstery has been replaced with
period correct Brown Chenille some time ago. It is showing some
wear, on the door panels in particular, which are two-tone affairs
with polished metal piping dividing the sections and with original
door handles and window cranks. The bench seats both front and rear
are big and luxurious and in great shape. The headliner is all
original, but vinyl flooring has been added in place of the
original carpets. The original two spoke steering wheel is a work
of art as is the dash board. The dash has been completely rewired
with Bauer Electronics original braided cloth wiring, the
speedometer has been rebuilt completely by Scotts, the clock
replaced with NOS (New Old Stock), and the original tube radio was
completely rebuilt. Everything works quite nicely, just like it
should.
The flathead engine in this car does not show any signs that it has
ever been apart or rebuilt. The rest of the systems have been
properly maintained, rebuilt, or replaced with originality and
proper function as the goals. The history and specs sheet for this
car documents the details nicely. When parts were replaced, (like
the fuel pump), the original parts were kept and go with the car.
The ignition and electrical system benefitted tremendously from the
new wiring harness and there are newer belts, hoses, and battery as
well as plugs, points, wires, and condenser. The generator has been
rebuilt as has the steering system with new king-pins installed,
idler arm replaced, and wheel bearings repacked. The
master-cylinder has been rebuilt and new brake lines run. The dual
exhaust system was added in 2000. The car sits on new 215x75R15
tires all around which make the car ride and drive a lot better
than the original biased ply tires.
This car is well maintained and functions as it should in all
respects. Its ready for any trip you would like to take in it. Come
on down and start making your plans.
