1978 MERCEDES-BENZ 280SLC
This 1978 Mercedes-Benz 280SLC is an unusual European market variant not originally sold in the United States. While US-bound r107s were powered by Mercedes’ familiar M116 and M117 V8s, this example is powered by the 2.8L M110 inline-six, which is rated at 177 horsepower. This potent six produces 27 horsepower more than the 3.8L V8-powered 380SL and SLC sold in the US, and similar power to the 4.5L V8 in the 350 and 450SL and SLC.
The differences from US market SLs and SLCs extend well beyond the powerplant, and include slimmer bumpers, not seen in the US since 1973, and a unique green velour interior.
We acquired this example from the family of its long-term owner, and it shows just under 79k miles on its six digit odometer.
The green velour shows minimal wear, with clean, taut materials on the seats, and a small wear spot visible on the driver’s outer bolster. The original green carpets are intact, and the headliner is taut and free of sags. This SLC is equipped with both power steering and A/C, both of which were optional on Euro-market SLCs in the 1970s. This SLC has manual windows and seats, and the desirable early climate control unit, which is more reliable and effective than the unit used in later SLs.
This SLC is a strong driver with a potent inline-six, smooth transmission and strong brakes. All of the instrumentation works correctly, and the car drives smoothly down the road and tracks well.
Some rust spots are visible under the door trim, but a thorough inspection has shown this SLC to be solid and free of other serious rust. What little rust is present can be addressed in-house at Automotion Classics, or addressed in the future while the car is enjoyed by its new owner.
