Offered here is a beautiful original condition 1927 Reo Flying Cloud Mate...currently on display at The Murphy Automobile Museum in Oxnard, California.
In 1927, so few Flying Cloud Mates were produced, that they are not listed in most price guides until 1929. The Mate was a slightly smaller vehicle than the Flying Cloud . The profile of the Mate was more aggressive looking with a lowered profile. It used the same motor as the Flying Cloud.
Never heard of a REO? That's not surprising. Ransom E. Olds (Oldsmobile) started the Oldsmobile company and made famous the “Curved Dash Olds” in 1901. When General Motors was organized by “Billy” Durant, he and Mr. Olds did not get along but Durant purchased Oldsmobile to become one of the first line of cars of General Motors. Ransom decided that he would build a car with his initials, since he could no longer use Oldsmobile. In 1905, REO, Ransom E. Olds was born.
This car was originally purchased by Frank Phillips of Phillips Petroleum (Phillips 66). Upon Mr. Phillips death in 1950, the car was purchased by Jack Long of Tulsa Oklahoma until he sold the car in 1970 to a Museum in Branson Mo. The REO was displayed there for 23 years. In 1993, the car was sold at auction to Mr. Ernie Sutherland who displayed the car in his Museum in Hardy Arkansas, (Vintage Motorcar Museum) until September of 2017. The REO was soon after auctioned again and I fortunately had high bid.
Since the car had been in museums for 47 years, there was much maintenance to complete to make it run again. The maintenance on the vehicle was performed by the in-house mechanic and his staff at the Murphy Automobile Museum. The museum's head mechanic states the vehicle is an "exceptional antique automobile." Except for the paint (34 years old), the car is completely original including a stunning leather interior. It “runs like a top.”
