Vehicle Description
Motorcar Studio is pleased to offer this 2015 Mercedes-Benz G550, a
single-owner example with a clean CarFax and just 9500 miles. But
this is no ordinary Gelndewagen - it's been fitted with portal
axles from Tibus Offroad to bring this G-Wagen to nearly the same
specification as the G550 4x4 (the "four by four squared" gets the
same portal axles from the factory as the legendary 6x6).
Portal axles provide an elegant solution that retains the stock
suspension with no adverse effects on steering geometry, and all of
the OEM electronic features including ABS and traction control work
perfectly without any error codes or warning lights. The internal
gearing of the axle compensates for the larger rolling diameter of
the tires (35x12.50 Toyos on 20-inch wheels) so that power delivery
is exactly as Mercedes intended. This technology comes with a high
price - around $25k installed - but the end result is 100mm of lift
without sacrificing ride, handling or performance characteristics.

The axle, wheel and tire combination also results in about an eight
inch wider track, so custom fiberglass fender flares have been
fitted along with custom-fabricated steel rock sliders (that also
serve as a step for easier ingress and egress). To finish things
off, a one-of-one custom winch bumper was also installed, but the
factory parking and adaptive cruise control sensors were integrated
into the new bumper so those systems work just as they should. A
Warn 9.0 RC winch is mounted in the center. And in a nod to the
ultra-exclusive Brabus versions of the G-Wagen, the exhaust exits
each side just forward of the rear wheel. A well-regarded 4x4 shop
completed these modifications per the owner's specification, and
the workmanship is second to none - the quality is such that it
could have easily left the factory this way.
In terms of the truck's condition, both interior and exterior
surfaces present as new (consistent with what you would expect for
a sub-10k-mile vehicle). Aficionados of the modern G-Wagen, which
is still hand-built in Graz, Austria, appreciate its unparalleled
build quality. The doors, which close like a bank vault, plus the
overall fit and finish remind this writer of the era when Mercedes
built cars to a standard, not a price. Included with the sale are a
set of four Tibus Offroad 18-inch beadlock wheels, new in their
boxes.
This G550 is unstoppable off road, and the modifications also give
it an aggressive stance and an incredible look - all without
compromising on-road comfort and performance. And the next owner
gets a special vehicle with a spec very close to the new 4x4 but
at half the cost. For more information about this 2015
