Vehicle Description
Chevrolet obviously did a lot right in 1968. Almost everything the
company produced that year has achieved a wide following that seems
to transcend several generations. Among that line-up, the '68
Chevelle claims one of the largest enthusiast followings. That's
why cars like this impressive Tripoli Turquoise Super Sport never
stick around our showroom for very long. The beneficiary of a
body-off, nut-and-bolt restoration, this fully documented A-body
wraps an original L35/4-speed drivetrain in retro 2-stage that's
guaranteed to stand out in the sea of Cranberry Red Chevys. So, if
you love a nice, factory-spec car, but favor aesthetics that
command attention, enjoy the best of both worlds by grabbing this
awesome Chevelle!
CLASSIC GOOD LOOKS
Hailing from the General's stalwart Kansas City manufacturing
facility, presently known as Fairfax Assembly, this stunning Super
Sport is the beneficiary of a detailed, body-off restoration that
was completed in late 2013. That careful rebuild was layered in
correct Tripoli Turquoise base, sealed in glossy clear and accented
with tasteful pinstripes. And today, mere weekend miles out of its
roof-to-rocker makeover, this top dog coupe sits as one spectacular
piece of iconic American muscle that's polished, unique and very
appealing!
For 1968, the freshly updated Chevelle sported a brand new look
that featured tapered fenders, a rounded beltline and a classic
long hood/short deck profile. At the front of the car, a broad,
SS-exclusive grille centers a prominent "SS396" emblem between
correct T3s, a bright "Chevelle" script and a factory-fresh bumper
that's fitted with amber parking lamps. Behind that grille, an
SS-exclusive hood props finned louvers in front of pristine glass,
a correct vinyl roof and straight stainless frames. Below that
hood, traditional door handles perfectly complement a correct
chrome mirror, dent-free rocker trim and classy, "396" branded
marker lamps. And at the back of the car, an SS-exclusive valance
centers a prominent "SS396" emblem between small taillights, a
second chrome bumper and clear reverse lamps.
BIG BLOCK POWER
Toss the hood and you'll find an original L35 big block that wears
a correct 3935440 casting number behind a correct ED assembly stamp
and a matching 223920 partial VIN. Oxygen and fuel enter the hot
mill's combustion chambers through a polished and decaled air
cleaner, stainless fluid lines and a spry Quadrajet carburetor.
Below that carb, a sea of brilliant Chevy Orange paint covers the
block from its cast intake all the way to its stamped oil pan. At
the back of that intake, a reliable points distributor shoots spark
through eight Packard TV R Suppression cables. Below those cables,
chrome valve covers perfectly contrast professionally restored
exhaust manifolds. In front of those covers, fresh V-belts spin a
rebuilt alternator and factory power steering next to a correct
smog pump. At the front of that pump, a reproduction Delco battery
complements a correctly decaled radiator. Those components are, in
traditional fashion, seated in a slick, Satin Black frame. And the
whole setup presents exceptionally well, from its insulated hood
all the way to its mechanical fuel pump.
NO BOLT LEFT UNTURNED
Under this impressive A-Body you'll find a fully sorted chassis and
solid floorpans that, like the car's glossy exterior panels and
lust worthy engine, have been restored to very high standards. At
the center of those floors, a correct Muncie 4-speed slings power
to a correctly stamped 12-bolt that's finished with correct 3.31
gears. Holding that stellar drivetrain in place is a fully rebuilt
suspension that mixes lucid power steering with proven drum brakes.
Exhaust flows through aluminized pipes to brash turbo mufflers. And
power meets the pavement through attractive Rally Wheels, which
twist F70-14 Firestone Wide Oval Super Sports around stainless trim
rings and turbine center caps.
PROPER CONTRAST
Open this second generation Chevelle's solid doors and you'll find
a correct Parchment interior. That restored cockpit is centered on
fresh bench seats. At the front of those thrones, a crack-free dash
hangs rebuilt telemetry over small Sunpro accessory gauges and a
correct Delco pushbutton radio. At the base of that dash, fade-free
carpet floats monochromatic mats around a traditional Hurst
shifter. At the sides of that carpet, stainless-trimmed door panels
add a little visual pop. The driver turns a correct Super Sport
steering wheel. And the passengers fill a fully restored trunk that
wraps a full-size spare tire in a correct jack, a fresh mat and
correct decklid decals.
