1968 Pontiac GTO Convertible
History
The original Pontiac GTO is an automobile that was built by Pontiac
from 1964 to 1974 model years.
The first generation GTO was a muscle car of the 1960s and 1970s
era. Although there were earlier muscle cars, the Pontiac GTO is
considered by some to have started the trend with all four domestic
automakers offering a variety of competing models.
Why This Car Is Special
This is a true 1968 GTO Convertible we have here at Skyway
Classics, it still has its original born-with YS 400 cid 350hp
engine. It is a rare GTO because only 9,980 convertible GTO's were
produced in 1968 out of 87,684 total production.
The car is very original and rides down the road, just like it did
in 1968. It has had a complete restoration and with the red
interior and black convertible top it looks stunning.
Mechanical
This GTO Convertible is loaded with options such as the Enduro
Bumper, Hideaway headlights, Power steering, Power disc brakes,
Hurst His/Hers Dual Gate shifter, Hood tachometer, custom Riddler
wheels, and more.
The engine is a YS 400 cubic inch which was rated at 350hp from the
factory. It looks factory stock with all the correct parts like the
air cleaner, intake, exhaust manifolds, wiring and hoses as it sits
in the complete and detailed engine compartment. Hot Rod tested a
1968 GTO equipped with the standard engine and obtained a quarter
mile reading of 14.7 seconds at 97 mph in pure stock form.
Interior
Our GTO has a complete restored and replaced red bucket seat
interior with matching red carpets, door panels, and trim. The
black convertible top works well and overall this is like a brand
new GTO again.
Exterior
General Motors redesigned its A-body line for 1968, with more
curvaceous, semi-fastback styling.
Pontiac abandoned the familiar vertically stacked headlights in
favor of a horizontal layout, but made hidden headlights available
at extra cost which ours has. The concealed headlights were a
popular option. The signature hood scoop was replaced by dual
scoops on either side of a prominent hood bulge extending rearward
from the protruding nose.
A unique feature on our GTO was the body-color Endura front bumper.
It was designed to absorb impact without permanent deformation at
low speeds. Pontiac touted this feature heavily in advertising,
showing hammering at the bumper to no discernible effect.
Concealed windshield wipers, which presented a cleaner appearance
hidden below the rear edge of the hood, were standard on this GTO
and another popular option it has is the hood-mounted tachometer,
located in front of the windshield and lit for visibility at
night.
Conclusion
You just don't find many GTO's like this 196 GTO Convertible we

won the Motor Trend Car of the Year Award and this one can be your
