1979 CHEVROLET CORVETTE
History
The Chevrolet Corvette (C3) was a sports car that was produced by
Chevrolet for the 1968 through 1982 model years. Engines and
chassis components were mostly carried over from the previous
generation, but the body and interior were new.
Why This Car Is Special
The silver 1979 Chevrolet Corvette we have at Skyway Classics saw
the return of the crossed-flag emblems on the nose and fuel door as
well as three popular features introduced on the '78 pace car
replicas, the new bucket seats, the front and rear spoiler package,
and the glass roof panels.
Our 79 has seen a recent body on restoration complete with new
paint and interior. All the restoration pictures and receipts to go
with car at time of sale.
Mechanical
The engine in our Vette is the base L-48 engine (badged as an L-82)
which generated 195 hp. Output for all engines increased due to new
"open flow" mufflers. The dual-snorkel air intake introduced on
L-82 cars the previous year was now fitted to all cars including
ours. It connects to the front with tubes to bring a fresh supply
of air at all times.
The engine has chrome Edelbrock valve covers, a 70 amp alternator,
new master cylinder, all fresh fluids, and an aftermarket HEI
ignition.
Our 79 Vette rides on Cooper Cobra GT Radial tires mounted on the
factory rally wheels, with a great exhaust note emanating from the
true dual exhaust system tips in the rear.
Interior
The blue and grey interior features the new lightweight "high back"
seats that were made standard equipment. The new seats have better
side bolster, provide easier access to the rear storage area, and
the seat pair resulted in a weight reduction of about 24
pounds.
It has a great stereo system with its AM-FM radio, power windows,
power seats, great door panels, and automatic shifter in the center
console.
Exterior
The silver paint looks great with the rocker panels painted black
and the addition of a custom rear window fiberglass addition. It is
a one-of-a-kind treatment that will attract a lot of conversation
when you are at the car shows.
The bolt-on front and rear spoilers were offered as an option and
functionally the spoilers decrease drag by about 15% and increased
fuel economy by about a half-mile per gallon. The roof T-tops are
painted a matching silver body color and wired into the standard
anti-theft alarm system.
