GM's Hamtramck, Michigan factory in January 1998, this car left the
assembly line as an Eldorado Touring Coupe (ETC) and was delivered
to Lund Cadillac Co., in Phoenix, Arizona. At some point since
then, it became a custom convertible. Its previous owner took care
of this car, ensuring it was stored in a garage. Dressed in Gold
Firemist, the car's paint and trim are in excellent overall
condition, with a couple of minor dimples visible on the hood and a
scuff on the front bumper. The windows, including the rear window
with its rear defroster grid and frameless side windows. are all
clear and intact. The car's lights, including the then-latest
interpretation of the Cadillac-slender taillights are in fantastic
condition. The car's bodywork is solid and straight, its integrated
bumpers fit well to the body, the engine bay is extremely tidy, the
battery looks new, the power-folding top is in fine order while the
trunk includes a cargo net and is nearly immaculate. This Eldorado
rolls on Goodyear Assurance radials, size 225/60R16 at all four
corners and each tire is wrapped around a factory, vented wheel
cover with a center cap. The wheels are in very good order while
the tires are in satisfactory shape. Under the hood is Cadillac's
Northstar V-8 engine, which caused a sensation when it was
introduced in the early 1990s. Here, it displaces 4.6L, has 32
valves, double-overhead cams, variable valve timing and sequential
fuel injection (code L37). This Northstar version generates 300
horsepower and 295 pounds-feet of torque. Backing the motor is GM's
4T80-E four-speed electronic automatic transmission and a 3.71
differential. As with almost any modern Cadillac, this car is
replete with convenience and safety features. It has automatic
climate control, cruise control, Magnasteer* power steering, tilt
steering column, power four-wheel disc brakes with Bosch anti-lock,
power windows, power locks, power mirrors, power antenna, power
front seats, front seater heaters, electrochromic day/night
rearview mirror and "Rainsense" windshield wipers. Safety equipment
included dual front air bags, traction control, Stabilitrak
electronic stability control and continuously variable road-sensing
suspension (CVRSS). *Magnasteerspeed-variablepower steering
combines conventionalhydraulic power steeringand magnetized
"doughnuts" mounted around the output shaft, which stiffen the
steering as vehicle speed increases. The car's tan interior is in
overall excellent shape. The front bucket and rear bench seats look
great, as does the matching carpet and headliner. The factory
four-spoke steering wheel faces the driver and houses the driver's
airbag. The instrument panel with its swaths of woodgrain appliqus
for added warmth and inner door panels with their similar treatment
that echoes the dash, are all in great shape. The center console
and shift lever mirror the rest of the interior's condition. Even
the glovebox light still works and opening the door reveals the
traction control and parking valet control buttons. (Switching on
the valet control cuts power to the trunk release, fuel door and
door locks so they cannot be accessed without the oval door key GM
used in those days. Tap the valet button again to disarm the
feature.) Completing the interior is a factory Delco-Bose AM/FM
stereo with cassette deck. The 1992 Eldorado was all new, drawing
both interior and exterior styling cues from the 1988 Cadillac
Solitaire show car. It was significantly larger than its
predecessorapproximately 11 inches longer, three inches wider and
substantially heavier. Window glass was once again frameless and
shortly after introduction Cadillac's newNorthstarV-8became
available replacing the previous generation's4.9L L26. Sales were
up, though never again at record heights. The Eldorado continued
for the rest of the decade with incremental changes and tapering
sales. A passenger side airbag was added as standard equipment in
1993. Styling was freshened in 1995, with updated bumpers front and
rear, side cladding, and a new grille. In 1996, the interior
received attention, with a new upholstery style, larger analog
gauge cluster, relocated climate control system, updated stereo
faces and standard daytime running lights. The ETC receives
rain-sensing wipers called "Rainsense." In 1997, theIntegrated
Chassis Control System was added. It involved microprocessor
integration of engine,traction control, Stabilitrakelectronic
stability control, steering and adaptivecontinuously variable road
sensing suspension(CVRSS), with the intent of improving
responsiveness to driver input, performance, and overall safety. It
was similar to the Toyota/LexusVehicle Dynamics Integrated
Management(VDIM). Competition to this Eldorado in 1998 included
BMW's 840Ci, Jaguar's XK8, Lincoln's Mark VIII LSC and
Mercedes-Benz's SL 500. Documentation includes original owner's
manual, original convenience guide, maintenance coupons (unused),
road service hotline card, warranty book and original business
cards of salesman and service advisor. If you'd like a unique
