1951 FORD VICTORIA
History
The 1949-51 Ford was an American automobile produced by Ford. It
was the first all-new automobile design introduced by the Big Three
after World War II, civilian production having been suspended
during the war, and the 1946-1948 models from Ford, GM, and
Chrysler being updates of their pre-war models.
Popularly called the "Shoebox Ford" for its slab-sided design, the
1949-51 Ford is credited both with saving Ford and ushering in
modern streamlined car design with changes such as integrated
fenders and more . The design would continue through the 1951 model
year.
Why Is This Car Special
The 1951 Ford Victoria like the one we have at Skyway Classics
featured an optional Ford-O-Matic automatic transmission for the
first time. Ford finally answered the Chevrolet Bel Air and
Plymouth Belvedere charge with the Victoria hardtop in 1951,
borrowing the term from the victoria carriage.
The car was an instant hit, outselling the Chevrolet by nearly 10%.
All 1951 Fords sported a new "dual-bullet" grille and heavy chrome
bumpers. This year Ford also added a new "turn-key" ignition.Front
suspension is independent coil springs. Head room was 36.1
inches.
Mechanical
Under the hood of this Ford you will find what is the essence of
all hot rods, an engine replacement consisting of a modified 302
cubic inch motor backed by an automatic transmission with the
shifter on the column.
The engine has many performance add-ones like a Holley carb, a blue
paint scheme from the engine to the 302 valve covers to the open
air cleaner, performance chrome alternator and coil, modified
electronics and distributor, large aftermarket radiator, and of
course air conditioning.
The exhaust gasses flow smoothly out the side with side pipe
cutouts and to the back of performance mufflers and dual chrome
exhaust tips. To complete the running package the 51 has original
style wheels/hubcaps with wide white wall tires.
Interior
The interior of our Ford is covered in a tri-color pattern of high
quality new but stock appearing grey-black/white piping. The split
bench seat is very comfortable and both it and the rear are
finished out in the two tone cloth.
The dash of the car has just as stock of an appearance with all of
the original style knobs, switches, gauges, etc. It even has dual
outside spotlights with shift knob like handles to move them.
Exterior
This 51 is becoming arguably one of the most favored among vintage
car builders and customizers. Our Vicky is all Black which is the
perfect combination with all that chrome. The body was completely
restored and painted and all the front to rear correct Victoria
trim is there.
A nice addition to our Vicky is the front "louvered hood" and the
rear "Continental" spare tire on bumper. It really attracts a lot
of looks to this car when people see it both from the front and
from behind.
Conclusion
The 1951 Ford Victoria like we have at Skyway Classics is one like
Ford released that was their response to the Bel Air. It is packed
with all the luxuries, additional trim, and a different grill that
made these cars were king of their time. And ours has all the great
additions to the power, handling, and looks to make it the King of
our time right now.
