Perhaps it was Jaguar that invented the sports sedan, at least in
its modern definition, when in 1955 the British automaker debuted
the replacement for its beloved, highly antiquated Mark IV.
The new car, initially known only by its 2.4-liter and 3.4-liter
inline six-cylinder engine sizes, was a breakthrough when it
debuted in late 1955. It was the first unibody Jaguar and its
complicated suspension had its own separate subframe mounted to the
chassis with rubber bushings. The result gave the car excellent
ride quality and superior handling, which made it a popular choice
with both police and those they were chasing.
When it came time for an update, the Mark 2 that bowed in 1959 was
enhanced with a larger greenhouse for improved outward vision.
Underneath, its suspension was revised for better road-holding, and
four-wheel disc brakes were made standard equipment. The new
availability of a 3.8-liter inline six-cylinder engine rated at 220
hp paired with a limited-slip rear differential that made the most
of the saloon's capable chassis.
The Mark 2 3.8 was the rarest of the breed, but it was also the
most desirable. The 1962 example presented here comes from the
middle of production and is painted a striking white over lush red
leather with a burled wood dashboard. A well-optioned model, this
Mark 2 includes upgrades such as speed holdJaguar's cruise
controlplus air conditioning, a period AM radio, and chrome wire
wheels.
This Mark 2 is a reminder that one is spoiled driving a Jaguar; its
owner recently completed an extensive drive in Italy. Mechanically,
the car is described as impeccable thanks to regular maintenance
from its current owner's private mechanic, with a stainless-steel
exhaust system, power steering, and four-wheel disc brakes
improving its long-distance credentials. In 2015 it effortlessly
completed a ladies-only driving tour of the Tuscany region in
Italy.
