Even among the fiberglass body makers, there’s a definite pecking order and Outlaw is one of the best. The car feels robust, the doors close with authority, and everything fits together extremely well. Reviewing the thick folders of receipts that accompany the car, it appears that it was finished in 2011 and we have to respect the workmanship that went into it, because it’s still in fantastic condition even after more than 16,000 miles. The Torch Red paint is simply brilliant, a high-impact look that really grabs your attention. As I mentioned, fit and finish are quite good, although there are a few minor signs of use and age—nothing to worry about, but this isn’t a perfect, fresh, high-dollar build. Just get in and drive without worries, which is why we’re so fond of this particular car.
The interior is professionally finished, something that you don’t see very often on affordable rods. The doors open suicide-style, as they did in 1934, and the door panels are simple but neatly done with a design that is as subtle as the paint is brilliant. We like the contrast. Adjustable bucket seats are wrapped in handsome tan cloth that’s durable and comfortable for long hauls, and there are automotive-grade carpets on the floor. The dash was painted to match the bodywork and filled with white-faced VDO instruments, as well as the controls for the Vintage Air HVAC system (fully operational, by the way). A custom mini console on the floor houses a Kenwood AM/FM/CD stereo head unit as well as the switches for the power windows and power trunk lid. There’s lots of sound insulation inside, so this rod is extremely comfortable for cruising and there’s an accessory CB radio if you’d like to reinstall it. The pattern started on the door panels continues on the headliner and the trunk is fully finished using the same materials. This Ford is ready to cruise.
The engine is a strong-running 350 cubic inch Chevy ZZ3 crate motor, which puts out a rather robust 330 horsepower and 380 pounds of torque. The hardware isn’t complex, but it’s bulletproof reliable and a lot of fun to drive. Up top there’s a Holley double-pumper carburetor on an aluminum intake, and inside it offers four-bolt mains, a hydraulic cam, and a 9.1:1 compression ratio ensure good street manners on pump gas. Finned valve covers and a lot of chrome and polished aluminum dress things up, so you’ll want to show it off, and there really aren’t many signs of use under the hood. A giant radiator with an electric fan seems to shrug off warm weather and an HEI ignition system is cleverly disguised as a vintage magneto, a neat little detail. Turn the key and this car fires every time, idles well, and really likes to hustle—that’s the benefit of buying a car that’s been sorted and driven.
Better yet, it’s backed by a 700R4 4-speed automatic overdrive transmission, which means effortless, quiet, comfortable cruising at any speed. Why are guys still using TH350s again? This totally transforms the car. There’s a custom driveshaft spinning a stout Ford 9-inch rear full of 3.55 gears, so you don’t have to worry about breakage and it’s punchy around town. The front suspension is a familiar Mustang II setup with rack-and-pinion steering while the rear hangs on simple leaf springs that ride well and don’t need any maintenance. Exhaust is by Flowmaster, with a great hot rod sound that doesn’t drone at speed. You’ll also note a fully boxed custom Outlaw frame that’s a rock solid platform and disc brakes to lock it down. Someone has also added red LEDs under the car to give it a cool look in the evening at shows. Traditional polished Torque Thrust wheels are the ideal choice on a rod like this and carry staggered BFGoodrich radials that give the car an awesome rake.
The car is nicely documented with build receipts and manuals, plus notes on a lot of the custom installations along the way. It is also worth noting that the car is titled as a 1934 Ford.
This bright red coupe quickly endeared itself to us simply because it gets everything right. A great look, comfortable interior, all the features you want in a modern rod (overdrive, A/C, power accessories, a great stereo) and none of the vices (it will never dent or rust!).
