Porsche returned the iconic 911 to its styling roots when it
introduced the 997 generation for the 2005 model year. Gone were
the controversial headlights of the outgoing 996, and in were
classic ovals and a much-upgraded interior. As always, competition
was where the 911 proved itself. The 911 GT2 used the 911 Turbo as
its base but was considerably upgraded for track use of its
downforce-enhancing body kit. Of course, there was more to come-and
there was a lot at stake as Porsche sought to take control of
Germany's famed Nrburgring race track once again in late 2010.
Thus was born the GT2 RS. Even though it was not a homologation
special, Porsche decided that the 620-hp, twin-turbo 3.6-liter
flat-six engine and a diet to the tune of 150 pounds over the
standard GT2 were worthy of the RS badge. All in, the GT2 RS
boasted an astounding 172 hp per liter channeled to the rear wheels
via a six-speed manual transmission. In its sights, Porsche had the
Nissan GT-R. The 911 GT2 RS's development codename was 727, which
represented the GT-R's Nrburgring lap time. Porsche achieved its
goal, with a 7:18 lap time. Making the GT2 RS, at the time, the
most powerful, street-legal Porsche.
Just 500 were commissioned, including the black over red leather
and suede example offered here. This highly optioned GT2 RS was
ordered with the Sound Package Plus, lightweight lithium-ion
battery, adaptive sports seats, and a number of cosmetic upgrades
like exterior color hints inside and clear taillights. It stands
out from more pedestrian 997s with its carbon fiber hood and its
red, factory-fitted roll cage.
With less than 7,600 miles showing, the GT2 RS has clearly been
well cared for. It has recently received a Porsche-recommended
"minor service" and is fitted with a set of new Michelin Pilot
Sport Cup 2 tires. This stunning example is as much a
collection-ready piece as it is a track-tuned monster.
