1972 Mercedes-Benz 350 SL
Mercedes-Benz has always reserved the SL designation for its most
special vehicles and such was the case when it introduced the R107
in 1972 as a replacement for the iconic W113 Pagoda series. With
contemporary styling that would remain fashionable through the end
of the next decade, it was powered by a 4.5-liter V-8 engine
(despite the 350SL designation in the first year). With fuel
injection, an overhead camshaft and bullet-proof reliability, the
engine delivered 230 horsepower, enough to motivate the car
comfortably in its role as a grand touring legend. This early
example features desirable chrome bumpers, much more attractive
than the later 5-mph units, and excellent paint. With a thorough
mechanical refresh performed and new carpets and seats, this is an
investment grade example that can serve as the centerpiece of any
serious collection.
Auction Estimate: $24,000-27,000
