With the Jaguar E-Type and Ferrari 250 garnering the bulk of
attention from the motoring press, Chevrolet responded with a
complete overhaul of the Corvette that was dubbed the Sting Ray.
Produced from 1963 to 1967 as both a roadster and coupe, it was
smaller, more powerful, and wore a futuristic fiberglass body
penned by Larry Shinoda. To improve road holding and ride quality,
Chief Engineer Zora Arkus-Duntov ordered development of an all-new
ladder-frame chassis with an independent rear suspension that
allowed it to compete with the best sports cars from Europe. For
1964, the famous split-window disappeared for practical
considerations and the roof vents were redesigned for greater
efficiency. For some reason, coupe sales fell considerably with
only 8,304 built, making them far more rare than the convertible.
With an extensive array of powertrains and optional equipment, few
examples are the same, resulting in a sports car that could be
tailored to match the driver’s desires.
The Motorcar Offered
Restored to a correct standard, this 1964 Corvette Coupe was
ordered with an L76 package, which provided it with a 365 hp
version of the iconic 327 cid V-8 engine. The foundation for the
restoration was a little used example, resulting in a car that
still shows less than 50,000 miles on the odometer. One of the most
attractive sports cars ever built and a bona fide American legend,
the Corvette is a blue chip collectible, and in second-generation
form is an excellent driving machine.
Estimate: $57,000-60,000
