With the Jaguar E-Type and Ferrari 250 garnering the bulk of attention from the motoring press, Chevrolet responded with a complete overhaul of the Corvette that was dubbed the Sting Ray. Based on Bill Mitchell’s 1957 SS racer and the XP-720 prototype, this all-new model was destined to take the market by storm. Introduced as both a roadster and coupe, it was smaller, more powerful, and wore a futuristic fiberglass body, boasting knife-edged front fenders and powerful haunches, styled by Larry Shinoda. To improve road holding and ride quality, Chief Engineer Zora Arkus-Duntov ordered development of an all-new stiffer ladder-frame chassis with an independent rear suspension that allowed it to compete with the best sports cars from Europe. For the first year only, every coupe featured a split rear window treatment that rendered these rare examples certain collectibles. Arguably, the most sought after American sports car ever produced, the 1963 Corvette Coupes are true unicorns of the hobby: revered, respected and valued as the very best of an immortal line.

The Motorcar Offered

Restored to an exacting standard by Rex Marshall, a long-time member of the National Corvette Restorer’s Society, this NCRS Top Flite® Award Winner is an exceptional example of the most prized Corvette model ever built. Fitted with the top of the line L84 fuel injected powerplant, this car is the rarest of the rare, wearing matching numbers to confirm its vaunted status as the most desirable Corvette in history. Opportunities to purchase such an iconic vehicle in the same condition seldom occur, making this example one the true stars of the auction, certain to attract attention and robust bidding from around the world.
