With the Jaguar E-Type and Ferrari 250 garnering the bulk of
attention from the motoring press, Chevrolet responded with a
complete overhaul of the Corvette that was dubbed the Sting Ray.
Based on Bill Mitchell’s 1957 SS racer and the XP-720 prototype,
this all-new model was destined to take the market by storm.
Introduced as both a roadster and coupe, it was smaller, more
powerful, and wore a futuristic fiberglass body, boasting
knife-edged front fenders and powerful haunches, styled by Larry
Shinoda. To improve road holding and ride quality, Chief Engineer
Zora Arkus-Duntov ordered development of an all-new stiffer
ladder-frame chassis with an independent rear suspension that
allowed it to compete with the best sports cars from Europe. For
the first year only, every coupe featured a split rear window
treatment that rendered these rare examples certain collectibles.
Arguably, the most sought after American sports car ever produced,
the 1963 Corvette Coupes are true unicorns of the hobby: revered,
respected and valued as the very best of an immortal
line.
