The Motorcar Offered
Built by Rick Giles, a noted hot rod fabricator who was responsible
for the 1927 Ford Roadster used in the film Dream
Machine, this 1930 Ford Model A 5-window coupe is a nationally
renowned example of the breed. It has received substantial press
coverage over the years and was featured in various programmes
produced by the Utah Salt Flats Racing Association. Construction of
this amazing machine began in 1994, starting from a collection of
parts that were then chromed and polished to create what you see
here today.
Body – The grill shell was replaced with a modified 1932 Ford
Fiberglass Grill Shell, with it and the stainless steel insert
shortened by seven inches. The original steel body has been
channeled and lowered 7-inches over the frame with a new 10-guage
steel floor, which is also used for the firewall separating the
interior from the 20-gallon polished aluminium fuel tank. The
roof panel was filled with 10-gauge steel and has all-new hardwood,
which is also used through the whole body.
Frame – For more interior space and better high-speed stability,
the wheelbase was stretched 7.5-inches. The frame boasts a raised
front crossmember, reversed I-spring, and a front axle with 4-link
suspension that has been dropped 4-inches to achieve the proper
rake. The frame members are boxed rails with custom crossmembers
and a ladder bar coil-over rear suspension. The frame also has a
custom trailer hitch for pulling a trailer.
Rear Axle – A narrowed Ford 9-inch unit fitted with Auburn
posi-traction and 3.89 gears has been installed.
Wheels – The rear wheels are 15 x 12” Aluminum Weld Pro Stars with
4½-inch back spacing. The front wheels are from the same
manufacturer but are sized 15 x 6”.
Tires – The rear tires are Hoosier 29 x 15.5 Radial Pro Street and
the front tires are Yokohama P195/60 R15 Avid H 4s
Radials.
Audio – The car is equipped with a Pioneer AM/FM cassette and CD
with a 12-disc changer located behind the passenger
seat. It has a 100-watt subwoofer, two 6 x 9 coaxial
speakers in the rear, and two 4-inch coaxial speakers in the side
panels.
Engine – The 355 cid Chevrolet V-8 has been balanced and blue
printed with the highest quality internal components including
Keith Black pistons, an “Extreme Energy” camshaft and matching
lifters from Competition Cams, and aluminum cylinder
heads that have a 10.75:1 compression ratio, oversized valves,
high-lift springs, stainless roller rockers, and heat-treated push
rods. The carburetor is a Holley 750 cfm mounted on an
Edelbrock RPM Performer intake manifold with a custom K & N air
cleaner and chrome block hugger
headers.
Transmission – Highly modified 700R4 Chevy 4-speed automatic
transmission with a 35% overdrive and High Stall converter, as well
as twin oil coolers. The transmission has been modified to
only shift manually in every gear other than drive, when it
operates as a standard automatic.
Interior – The interior is heated and air-conditioned, while the
steering wheel tilts and telescopes. The door operated interior
lights also have auxiliary travel lights for reading maps at
night. Windshield wipers and seat belts have been added
for additional safety.
