Debuting in 1958, the Impala was an instant smash hit and helped to
propel the bowtie brand to number one in manufacturing with this
new model, accounting for 15% of total Chevrolet production. The
1958 Chevrolet Bel Airs owed nothing to the previous year, from
their four headlights to rolled and lowered rear fins, to the
all-new bodywork and curvaceous interior cabin. Introduced as the
top of the line Bel Air hardtops the Impala also featured the
innovative X Frame which provided greater structural rigidity and
resistance to twisting forces and, at the same time, permitted the
lowering of the car without sacrificing space. This Onyx Black Bel
Air Impala is in superb condition and is a great representation of
the one-year-only body style. The recipient of a recent frame off
restoration, every inch of the full-size Chevrolet has been
lovingly refinished. The laser-straight body work accentuates the
gleaming chrome molding and trim which is all complete. Also, the
terrific spinner hubcaps look just right with the wide white-wall
tires. Power is compliments of the 348-cubic inch V8 engine, first
used in 1958, with 4-barrrel carburetion producing a healthy 250
horsepower. This smooth running Turbo-Thrust V8 engine is connected
to the reliable two-speed Powerglide automatic transmission. A
unique factory installed option is the Chevrolet developed Flameout
Vacuum Ashtray. This accessory used a glass jar that was mounted on
the driver's side of the car, under the dash, and was connected to
the engine for receiving manifold vacuum. When the driver or
passenger was ready to discard their cigarette, they placed it in
the dash-mounted receptacle and depressed a spring-loaded valve.
Depressing the valve would allow engine vacuum into the jar,
drawing the cigarette into the jar, and extinguishing the hot end!
A 1958 Impala Bel Air is a unique find, especially one this nice.
