1950 Salt Flat Racer
Ford Salt Flat Racer
A labor of love that started with an old cast aluminum grill, this
vintage style salt flat racer is fabricated around a custom 3-inch
steel box frame with a Mustang II front end kit and late model Ford
rear end. Powered by a 1950 Ford Flathead V-8 mated to a 3-speed
manual transmission. The engine features tri-power with headers and
glass pack mufflers. The custom aluminum bodywork is set off with a
roll cage, while the interior has an aluminum bomber seat and
four-point racing seat belt. On the salt flats for a short run,
this unique attention getter reached an impressive 96 mph, made
more so by the fact that all the speed equipment is period correct.
Impossible to recreate, this stunner is sure to create attention
wherever it goes.

The owner states:
“I live by the Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah. I have always
been interested in vintage racers. I was at the dumps about
35 years ago and found an old cast aluminum grill. I hung it
up in my garage and it remained there for about 32 years. One
day I decided to build a race car and I started with this grill and
worked back. I made a 3 inch steel box frame, installed a
late model Ford rear end, bought and installed a new Mustang II
front end kit. I found a 1950 Ford flat head, installed
tri-power, headers, glass pack mufflers, 50s style Ford rims and
white wall radial tires with beauty rims, baby moons. I bent,
cut and welded body frame and roll cage; covered it in aluminum
sheeting. I installed an aluminum bomber seat, four point
racing seat belts. I took it out to the Salt this past year
(2017). The salt was a little slippery, but I still got
it to go 96 mph and the ride was smooth. All the speed
equipment was built before 1950. It has a Ford 1950 3 speed
transmission.”
