Vehicle Description
History
The Plymouth Road Runner is a mid-size car with a focus on
performance built by Plymouth in the United States between 1968 and
1980. By 1968, some of the original muscle cars were moving away
from their roots as relatively inexpensive, fast cars as they
gained features and increased in price. Plymouth developed the Road
Runner to market a lower priced, basic trim model to its upscale
GTX.
Plymouth paid $50,000 to Warner Bros.-Seven Arts to use the Road
Runner name and likeness from their Wile E. Coyote and The Road
Runner cartoons (as well as a "beep, beep" horn, which Plymouth
paid $10,000 to develop). The Road Runner was based on the Chrysler
B platform the same as the Belvedere and Satellite, as a
back-to-basics mid-size performance car.
The 1969 model kept the same basic look, but with slight changes to
the tail lights and grille, side marker lights, optional bucket
seats, and new Road Runner decals.
The 383 engine was standard with the 426 Hemi as the only option
available for the Road Runner until mid-year production. The 383
was marketed as the "383 Road Runner" engine.
The Plymouth Road Runner was named Motor Trend "Car of the Year"
for 1969.
Features & Options
You can go back in time and own that Car Of The Year when you come
to Skyway Classics and buy the 1969 Plymouth Road Runner we have
here. This Scorch Red Road Runner was a purpose built muscle car.
It was meant to go fast while retaining a Spartan look and
interior, meaning less weight and frills.
First of all, this is a correct H-code 383 car, which means a lot
today as a lot of Satellite clones pretend to be a Road Runner. Not
the case here, this is a real Road Runner.

It is powered by a performance built, numbers matching 383 V8 with
a four-speed manual transmission, shifted by the legendary Pistol
Grip Shifter. The 383 is painted in Hemi Orange, with an Edelbrock
4-barrel carburetor, Edelbrock Torker intake, and Hooker
Competition long tube headers, and dual exhaust with chrome tips.
It also has black finned Mopar valve covers, performance plug
wires, chrome air cleaner with the correct decals and detailed
engine compartment. And to top it off, it has the A12 Flat Black
Fiberglass open hood scoop (which is hinged to open like the stock
metal hood) to get all the fresh air in you can. Locking it up is
the chrome hood pins.
The black vinyl factory looking interior has bucket seats, center
armrest, three-spoke sports steering wheel, power steering, the
original gauge package and auxiliary readout mounted gauges below
the dash.
Bright chrome on this red and black theme really pops and it rides
on black steel wheels with poverty hubcaps and chrome lug nuts, and
bright redline tires. And it has the famous Road Runner cartoon
graphics and the BEEP! BEEP still intact.
