Vehicle Description
A 1980 Pontiac Trans Am Turbo Indy 500 Pace Car is a mouthful to
say, and if you're a T/A fan, that's all you'll ever want to hear.
After all, that makes this a rare and unique sports machine with a
turbo V8 under the hood.
You're looking at a highly original presentation of a very complex
factory package. The two-tone Cameo White and Ontario Gray is
believed to be original, but that's just the beginning of the
special pace car's story. Similar to the 10th anniversary cars of
'79 there's a distinct "screaming" hood bird that artfully sets off
light gray and red tones with the Ontario Gray. From there it runs
up the hood, around the doors, and ends at the pinstripe behind the
T-tops. Speaking of the pinstripe, this red and gray dual line also
runs across the fender flares to match the bold Trans Am decal on
the fenders. Plus, it also provides another color separation line
on the bumpers and full-width rear spoiler. Even the official pace
car decals are completed in this color scheme. This was a total
color package that was expensive to coordinate, that's why the pace
cars were one of the priciest Pontiacs you could buy that year.
It's also why it's one of the rarest with only 5,700 examples
produced. More than just exclusive, this was a speedy-looking T/A.
With the pointed Endura front end, large side air ducts, offset
turbo bulge in the hood, and turbo alloys, it was built from day
one to always standout in the best ways.
Inside the seats, door panels, and carpeting are all highly
original. So you'll love all the correct details like the
Oyster-colored hobnail cloth inserts in the bucket seats, as well
as the gray and red Firebird logos stitched into the doors and rear
seat. This has provisions for some great factory features like
power windows, power locks, and air conditioning. Plus, there have
been some nice upgrades along the way, like the full set of
auxiliary gauges and an AM/FM/CD stereo with aux input. But your
favorite driving features are still right where you want them.
You'll grab the iconic three-spoke sports steering wheel, and
beyond that is the machine-turned aluminum dash panel with large
speedo and tach/clock combo.
Lift the hood for a very unique presentation. The 4.9-liter
turbocharged V8 motor was only offered for two years, and fans
instantly identify this setup with the offset air topper that makes
room for the turbocharger. With everything looking quite correct in
the engine bay, it's believed this is the original motor to the
car. That's particularly good, because the turbo motors were known
for extra high performance fortification and upgrades. These unique
T/As were a cool addition to the lineup when the big torque of the
V8 would get you off the line and the turbo offered an extra hit of
power in the mid-range. Plus, this comes with great handling
features like front disc brakes and thick sway bars front & rear
for fine sports car experience. Add in power steering and TH350
three-speed automatic transmission, and you've got a terrific total
cruising package.
A highly desirable and highly original turbo T/A that you get to
drive around in with the T-tops out. Oh yeah, this is a very cool
car offered today at quite an obtainable price. Don't miss out.
