Europe's First Turbocharged Production Car
Demands for increased power for its medium-sized saloon had
prompted BMW to introduce the original 2002 in 1968, and it was the
fuel-injected 2002tii that provided the basis for the model's
ultimate expression - the Turbo - which was readily distinguishable
by its deep front air dam, wheelarch extensions and boot-mounted
spoiler. This top-of-the-range model had been introduced following
a successful racing program that saw a works entered, turbocharger
equipped 2002 win the 1969 European Touring Car Championship in the
hands of Dieter Quester. Faced with having to compete against the
Porsche 911 & Alfa Romeo GTA, BMW opted for 'bolt on' horsepower
courtesy of a turbocharger in a compact package resulted in
outstanding performance and the fastest and most exciting
medium-sized sports saloon of its day. Produced for the 1973/74
season only, this rare model is rightly regarded as a modern
classic and highly sought after.
4290652 offered here, was purchased new on April 29, 1975 by
Gioviere Nicola of Milano, through Briancar BMW of Seregno, Italy
in Silver over Black leatherette livery as it wears today. In
September of 1976, this rare 2002 Turbo was transferred to Rovatti
Livio of Sassuolo, Modena (MO 380375), whom would go on to own and
care for this fantastic BMW for nearly 40 successive years. From
late 2015-2016 the 2002 would receive a stunning restoration in
Italy to like new condition, while preserving many original
components. Entering restoration as a very solid, complete,
matching and honest example, the Turbo would receive a meticulous
complete nut-and-bolt freshening to concours standards by marque
experts, with authentic BMW supplied parts. Both photo and paper
documentation of the work accompanies the sale. Aside from the
gorgeous cosmetic finishes it now displays, the 2002's mechanical
components were fully addressed, including new engine internals and
auxiliary components. Fortunately, much of the car's factory
upholstery was saved and reinstalled due to its overwhelming
originality and presentation. The overall results are simply
stunning.
This Neue Klasse fully exemplifies quality craftsmanship and
panache as one of the finest 2002 Turbos available. 4290652 comes
complete with its VIN-matched original Service Manual and BMW
European Service Directory in vinyl folio, Original Italian Title
copy, Customs and Shipping Documentation, jack, spare and
supplemental CoCo and sisal floor mats. We are pleased to offer
this turn-key example which is truly one of the finest examples we
have seen. Having never been concours shown or vintage toured this
Turbo will surely provide abundant opportunities for its next
caretaker to enjoy. Now available for worldwide purchase and
delivery from our Houston, Texas showroom.
