For Sale: 1970 Chevrolet Monte Carlo SS in Manitowoc, Wisconsin

Vehicle Description

All vehicle trades considered, including classics and performance.  I can assist with financing and transport as needed.

Here is a phenomenal example of one of the most rare and desirable cars from 1970.  It is a genuine Monte Carlo SS454 with all the right pedigree; numbers-matching drivetrain, build sheet, Protect-O-Plate, and more.  In addition, this well optioned Arizona car has been through a frame-off restoration and has only 54,000 miles.  There just aren’t many examples like this one.

Chevrolet built almost 150,000 Monte Carlos in 1970.  Of that large number, only 3,823 were SS454 models, making them even more scarce than the 4,475 LS6 Chevelles produced that year.  And much like the Chevelle, the Monte Carlo SS454 is often faked and can be difficult to authenticate without the items you’ll find here.

This particular car was built at the Los Angeles plant in January 1970 and sold new at Chapman Chevrolet in Chandler, AZ.  It then spent nearly thirty years in the Phoenix area, after which it came to Wisconsin and received a frame-off restoration that was completed in 2003.  It has only been driven 1,000 miles since.

The car was repainted its original code 17 Shadow Gray which is fairly rare on any Monte Carlo, much less an SS454.  The black vinyl top has the desirable full halo configuration seen on early 1970 cars.  Everything is in excellent condition with straight body gaps throughout.  All sheetmetal is original with the exception of one fender.  Be sure to see the pristine condition of the rocker panels, lower door areas and jambs.  The underside also looks fantastic with the frame having been sandblasted and repainted.  Note the F41 rear suspension and unique shock absorber shields.

The engine is the numbers-matching 454 cubic inch LS5 factory rated at 360 hp.  Despite the low mileage it was fully rebuilt to factory specifications.  The cylinder heads received hardened valve seats for compatibility with unleaded gasoline.  The TH400 transmission is also numbers-matching and works perfectly without any leaks.  The 12-bolt rear end with 2.56 gears is also original and bears the correct CRJ stamping.

This Monte Carlo has many other new parts.  The suspension received new ball joints, bushings, and springs.  The unique SS454 air leveling compressor is present, but the lines and shocks were replaced with conventional air shocks for more flexibility.  There are also new tie rods, brake components, and body mounts.  Brake lines, fuel lines, fuel tank, exhaust; nearly everything is new or rebuilt.

The interior required minimal restoration work.  The original headliner and seats are in remarkable condition, as are the dashboard and door panels.  Note this car was equipped with the U14 gauge package which is fully functional.  The factory air conditioning has been converted to R134a refrigerant and blows cold!  The horn, wipers, and dash lights all work as expected.  So do the optional power windows and power door locks.  There is an aftermarket digital AM/FM/aux stereo along with the factory U76 windshield antenna.

Again, this unique SS454 comes with the original build sheet.  It correctly matches the dates and stampings found throughout the car, along with the door VIN sticker and cowl tag.  It also has the matching Protect-O-Plate showing the car being sold new to Mr. Cordoba in Phoenix, AZ on 8-21-70.  These are all great things to have on any classic car but become especially valuable on such a special model.

This Monte Carlo is a truly exceptional find with its rarity, documentation, and condition.  But not to be overlooked is the very comfortable ride offered by the long 116” wheelbase and all the new parts.  Couple this with a spacious, air-conditioned interior and big block motivation and you’ve got a classic car that can really be enjoyed as well.
