Drag racing is a long-standing sport with a storied history. You
know what they say about the very first drag race; it occurred
shortly after the second car was built! Due to the immense history
of drag racing, nostalgic "old-school" race cars are as popular as
they have ever been, and this 1962 Pontiac Grand Prix is no
exception.
Built as a Pro Stock drag car, this Pontiac has a plethora of
serious, high-dollar upgrades including a ton of horsepower and
immense weight-reduction. This car not only walks the walk, but it
talks the talk too-big time! The hood and doors are made of carbon
fiber, and the fenders and trunk lid are fiberglass. Additionally,
the bumpers are fiberglass replacements that have been chromed to
retain that nice, original look. Though it is clearly a race car,
the original styling of the Grand Prix has been retained in this
Pro Stock build, giving it an overwhelming sense of nostalgia.
Under the hood is a 541 cubic inch engine putting out 900
horsepower. That would be more than enough in a normal Grand Prix,
but wait-there's more! Remember all those carbon fiber panels? You
may be wondering what the advantage is. Because of the extent of
weight-reduction modifications, this car weighs in at 3,190lbs
including a 250lbs driver. That's 800-1,000lbs less than a factory
unmodified Grand Prix! Combine that weight with 900 horsepower, and
you're looking at some serious speed. That beautiful
power-to-weight ratio is what allows this big body beauty to do
well under a 10-second quarter mile.
This Pontiac is a serious race car; it's both big and quick! It is
tasteful and well put together with many engine, body, and chassis
upgrades. It even has a roll cage! If you're looking for a powerful
nostalgic racer, this is the car for you. It has only had four
quarter mile passes put on it since built, and one certainly
couldn't replicate this car for the price! This is a nice, solid
example of a well-executed classic drag car.
