Up for sale is this stunning 1962 Pontiac Grand Prix powered by
the legendary 389 Tri Power and Roto Hydromatic 3-speed
transmission. This car was completely restored many years ago,
shortly before being purchased and parked by a wealthy California
collector/car hoarder, known to purchase exceptional examples,
drive them home and then park them in one of five of his climate
controlled warehouses scattered between Idaho and Texas.
Hundreds of his cars were consolidated in his San Antonio, Texas
warehouse, where I found it and purchased it from his estate
earlier this year. After sitting more than 20 years the car
required a thorough mechanical going through. The 8-lug power drum
brake system was completely overhauled with a rebuild of the
original brake booster and master cylinder, new soft lines, wheel
cylinders and resurfaced friction materials. Wheel and axle
bearings were replaced and resealed. The rear end and driveshaft
was serviced. Rubber bushings and ball joints addressed. The
transmission was drained and a new pan gasket installed.
Luckily the fuel lines had been disconnected and only the gas tank
was contaminated with old gas and was replaced. The water pump and
thermostat was replaced as well as hoses, belts and filters. The
carbs were serviced and a new cap, rotor, wires and plugs were
installed. Power steering fluid flushed and the oil changed. Fresh
Hankook radials have been fitted to the iconic eight lug wheels
This car has now been completely sorted and I am proud to say runs
out excellent, steers and stops straight. Accelerates and kicks
down with authority. The big girl handles surprisingly well
considering her 3850 pound mass.
1962 was the inaugural year for the Grand Prix, an upscale version
of the Catalina that at 17 and a half feet long and 6 and half feet
wide embodied Pontiac's new Wide-Track tag line. It defined a new
segment coined as the "personal luxury class" and thanks to John De
Lorean this car was offered with big block high output engines.
This 389 cubic inch Tri Power looks handsome under the hood and
sounds like pure American muscle under heavy foot; no wonder
considering it was putting nearly 350 horsepower and over 420 foot
pounds of torque to the ground. Inside it is supremely comfortable
and spacious with a back seat that makes 4-up cruising a joy. The
car has great outward visibility and the classic pillar-less roof
line gives the car an airiness that characterized the era.
Overall this car is in excellent condition, everything works as it
should and it of course looks fantastic. I have been sporting it
around lately with the beauty rings removed from the wheels, giving
it a sinister all business profile. But I like the more formal,
dressed up look with them on just as much.
This car is located in Rowlett, Texas and can be shown by
appointment. The car is offered as is where is and open to best
offers. Trade offers considered; other classic and special interest
cars only, no bikes or boats please. I can assist with
transportation. Texas residents may be subject to sales tax and
fees. If you are reading this ad the car is still for sale. Sales
assistants and scammers need not apply.
