In 1979, the US Army issued a design request for a new tactical vehicle which led the development of the HMMWV. The US Army awarded contracts to three companies: AM General, Chrysler Defense and Teledyne Continental to design and develop 11 prototype HMMWV's. US Army and AM General test drivers drove Humvee's over rocky hills, through deep sand and mud, in water up to 60 inches deep, in desert heat and Arctic cold. Still, HMMWVs passed with flying colors, often easily exceeding even the toughest standards. The development and operational testing was conducted in 1982 and, in 1983, the US Army awarded a $1.2 Billion contract to AM General to immediately manufacture 55,000 HMMWV's. In 1989, the Humvee entered combat as part of Operation Just Cause, the US invasion of Panama. They have become the backbone of U.S. forces around the world. Over 10,000 were used during Operation Iraqi Freedom by U.S. forces as well as some other countries during the 2003 invasion of Iraq.

It is fully street legal and comes with a CLEAR Idaho title. It still retains it's correctly mounted - ORIGINAL - driver's door jamb mounted Data/VIN plate which is shown in a picture. The motor also sports the ORIGINAL intake manifold, ORIGINAL exhaust manifolds, ORIGINAL valve covers, ORIGINAL intake ducting, ORIGINAL air cleaner housing and the ORIGINAL Style Niehoff 24 volt generator and dual voltage regulator, etc. The engine is backed by a SMOOTH - 3 speed "Hydra-Matic" automatic transmission that also functions very well and is mated to a BULLETPROOF - Borg Warner "NP-218" - Two Speed - Hi/Lo locking chain driven transfer case and dual BULLETPROOF "Torsen" front and rear differentials !!
