Having covered only 3,364 miles from new, this original Y81 (non T-Top) Special Edition Trans Am is tough to beat. Boasting its original Starlight Black paint and a black interior, this car features the proper SE pinstriping and gold elements, such as the gold grille surrounds and interior appointments. It also hosts the matching-numbers 6.6L V-8 engine with 4-speed manual transmission, Radial Tuned Suspension, power steering and power brakes, and rolls on the famous and highly detailed 15-inch gold Snowflake wheels wrapped in Uniroyal steel-belted radial tires. Aside from 1977's “Smokey and the Bandit,” part of what makes these Trans Ams so popular is the outlandish, unapologetic level of detailing and styling that went into them, such as the unique turned-down dual exhausts protruding from behind the rear fenders, the wind-cheating wings and spoilers, the new-for-1977 front end with four square headlights, its low stance and aforementioned pinstriping. Together, along with others, it was these elements that blended together to create an automotive-styling cocktail like no other. The Special Edition Trans Am was introduced in 1976, when Pontiac was celebrating its 50th anniversary. Presented in black with gold striping and detailing, gold rims and special interior appointments, the 1976 Trans Am SE stunned the crowds when it debuted and the look continued on for 1977. The 455 CI V-8 was no longer available by 1977, and the 6.6L remained as the only engine choice, either an Oldsmobile 403 or Pontiac 400, depending on the transmission and destination, though both offered fantastic performance for the money and price point. Hal Needham, director of “Smokey and the Bandit,” once said something to the effect that he sold more Trans Ams than Pontiac ever intended; it's very possible. Today, very few are in such original condition as this one, making it a fantastically rare opportunity to acquire an unrestored 1977 Trans Am SE, very similar to the Bandit's car.
