Vehicle Description
Luxury, distinction, serious big block performance are just the
headlines on this 1969 Mercury Cougar XR7. It was born with a
Q-code Cobra Jet big block V8, and it has had all the right
investments from the A/C interior to the new slick paint. So you're
looking at the ultimate vintage luxury muscle machine.
The Cougar certainly has all the right muscle car details for the
era, and it walks with big cat swagger. The styling is
Mustang-sized, but it's a little more sophisticated. You see it in
the subtle body crease running from the front fender to the rear
wheel opening. Plus, the hidden headlights feel more Lincoln than
Ford. A few extra dollops of chrome, including the gorgeous
sequential taillights with their chrome surrounds, and this car
manages to look both sporting and elegant at the same time. The
best representation of this is the paint. You're looking at a
recent investment where the factory-correct Candyapple Red was
given a modern application, so it has an amazingly slick metallic
presence. And the black vinyl roof is exactly what you want for
'60s premium motoring. The big hood scoop and rear spoiler are
borrowed from the aggressive Eliminator package. And there's even a
nod to Shelby with the upgrade to Halibrand-style American Racing
wheels.
Inside the feeling of premium continues. The deeper red color of
the interior against the cherry-red hue of the exterior feels
downright European. The carpet and headliner were replaced to keep
everything fresh, and of course, it also helps that this original
interior is made of leather. The factory-correct deep-bolstered
buckets have been taken care of so well, that it almost feels like
1969 all over again. A center console, three-spoke rim-blow
steering wheel, full round gauge package (including tach), and all
that wood panel trim - it's the perfect blend of luxury and
performance. Besides just the great presentation, this one has all
the right subtle upgrades. For example, the AM/FM radio looks
correct, but it's a retro unit that incorporates a digital tuner
and aux input. Plus, the air conditioning has been upgraded to
R134a to keep you feeling as cool as you look behind the wheel.
Everyone loves looking under the hood and seeing big block power
fill the engine bay. That's especially true on this one. It's a
Q-code coupe, and so it came from the factory with the top-dog 428
cubic-inch Cobra Jet motor. With a car this significant, we're glad
to have a corresponding date motor still under the hood. Best of
all, there's only 250 miles on the V8 since it was rebuilt. And you
can instantly see this investment in the level of freshness on the
belts, wires, and hoses, as well as the Cobra valve covers. This
monster V8 inhales deeply with a Edelbrock four-barrel carburetor,
and it exhales with thunderous authority through the dual exhaust.
Out on the road this muscular Mercury knows how to keep its
composure thanks to a thick sway bar up front, traction bars in the
rear, and newer bushings all around. Add in a three-speed automatic
transmission, power steering, front disc brakes, and the modern
grip of BF Goodrich Super Sport tires, and you've got a total
package worthy of the Cougar name.
This is a significant and powerful Cougar, and so it comes with all
the right paperwork, including the factory buildsheet, owner's
manual, restoration photos, and Marti Report. It's a cool big block
classic that has the appeal of the Mustang, but in a rarer and more
luxurious package. So if you're looking for an upper-class muscle
machine, don't let this one slip away. Call today!!!
